Okay, I'll admit that I'm kind of a dweeb when it comes to cool apps for my Android cellphone.

I've heard that iPhone has the best apps, but I know that at least some of the apps are universal.

I went to the "app store" on my cellphone, and there's some interesting applications...BUT I heard that there's an app where you can "take a pic" of the night sky, and it will show you what you're looking at.

Is this true, and if so how can I find that app?

While we're on the topic of apps, what's your favorite app; why, and how can we (I) find it? :D

I'm sorry, I'll admit first hand that I can sometimes be technically retarded.

A friend of mine just informed me that it's not a "pic" that you take with your cellphone, but that the app uses the GPS on your phone to illustrate what you're supposed to be able to see in the night sky.

Any ideas Gentleman?

Google Sky Map?

This is a free app that also offers the ability to point Android devices to the sky and map out constellations. In addition, users can search for planets, grids, deep sky objects, and also use the search functionality to find something specific in the atmosphere. It provides a simple interface and is a great tool for identifying anything in the sky. (Android)

Where's My Water is a fun app, picked it up for 10 cents when Google had their 10 billionth download promotion.

That would be "Star Walk" by Vito Technology and the European Space Agency. I have the iPhone version. It's only $2.99 in the US, gets a 5-star rating. Don't know about an Android version, but it should be easy to find out.

The "take a pic" option is that it will overlay its map over the picture from the camera. Takes a little fiddling to align them, but worth the effort.

For $3 you get a PHD in astronomy. (Where did my smilie go?)

There's one called Night Sky on the iPhone apps. its $.99 Uses the GPS and compass. Can even tell you whats a satellite instead of a star.
