I'm so sad. This has been on my bucket list of places to go see. Now, I will not get a chance.

They've tried unsuccessfully to put out the flames before, so you probably have a chance to still get there before they figure out how.

There have been numerous attempts to end the fire, including in 2010 when Mr Berdymukhamedov also ordered experts to find a way to put out the flames.

Which, obviously failed. It does look lovely there though. (I'd be if I had to go there, but to each there own.)

If they do somehow manage to extinguish it, a less expensive alternative is a trip to WNY to the Eternal Flame Falls. Not quite as spectacular, but it is a pleasant hike in the woods.

There's a place in Germany that has literally been burning for ages. Brennender Berg (Burning Mountain) is a former mine which caught fire hundreds of years ago and has been burning ever since, setting a world record.

Yeah most of the city of Centralia, Pennsylvania has been burning since 1962 from an underground coal fire. The hole in the OP is nothing.
