Working in the travel industry, every so often I stumble across an unusual article about some obscure destination or something stupid an airline/hotel company/car rental company has done. However, this one surely takes the cake.

Sand larceny jeopardizes Jamaica resort project

July 17, 2008

By Gay Nagle Myers

Thieves have stolen a beach in Jamaica.

The action prompted Prime Minister Bruce Golding to launch an investigation into the theft of 500 truckloads of white sand from a $110 million beachfront development site at Coral Spring in Trelawny, on the island's northwest coast, according to published reports.

The robbery has jeopardized the future of the 64-acre project, which is supposed to include 36 luxury villas with a spa, restaurant, theater and marina in its first phase. All construction work and international marketing and promotional plans are on hold.

A consortium of Jamaican and overseas investors backing the development said that the quarter-mile white-sand beach "now looks like a mined-out quarry."

How the removal of 500 truckloads of sand could go unnoticed is one question, and the hiding spot of the pilfered powder is another, according to Fredrik Moe, managing director of the development.

"We intend to use every available legal angle to resolve this," Moe said. "These people must be punished."
Indeed. How does one not notice the disappearance of FIVE HUNDRED truckloads of sand? It's not as if they did it all in one night, I'm sure, so how did they do it, and where the fuck is it????

I for one welcome our sand-sucking Alien overlords :)

They stole a beach.

Where exactly would you hide a beach?

Who exactly could you sell a beach to illegally?

What would you do with an illegal beach?

Why would you attepmt to steal a beach?

How the FUCK do you expect to get away with stealing a beach?!

Wait, Jamaica.
There's your first clue, Sherlock. They're all so stoned on ganja no one noticed the 500 trucks.

Since we're all asking obvious questions, here's mine; how can someone miss 500 trucks of sand?

go check the land scaping section at home depot and look for the bags of white sand. I'll bet you'll see an "imported from jamaica" stamp on it. :P

Suppose you were a competitor of the resort being built, or an enemy of the investors, or perhaps a property owner who was displaced by the development without just compensation. And suppose you could get your hands on a fireboat or any other water craft with a strong water jet on it. All you'd have to do is anchor close in and hose the beach out to sea. You could probably wash out a quater-mile of beach in a night, and you wouldn't need trucks, a hidey-hole, or a buyer.

I blame the gays... As a country that makes gays illegal I say it serves them right..

You don't want us on your beaches we'll take them away.

Why steal sand?
why indeed?

goes for $19 a yard at my nursery, and that's just the fill sand. The pretty white stuff (of which resorts are made of) is $25. If the "truck" (such a vague measurement) holds 10 yards, like the ones that bring in our bulk materials, that's 5,000 x $25 = $125,000.

what's the going rate for diesel in Jamaica?

the valis hypothesis seems the most likely, imho.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! They stole a beach!!! LMFAO! ;)
