I've been having problems with my hair thinning on top and in front, and I find it troubling because of how young I am.

Now I attributed this hair loss, at first to my weight loss but seeing as I am no longer on a diet and the problem persists I just am not sure anymore :(

But recently I've got a strange notion that maybe the light bulb on my ceiling lamp could be a contributing factor. My ceiling lamp hangs on my ceiling fan and it is rather low. I have it on nearly constantly and I was wondering if that light or heat could have an effect on my hair?

Hair loss is pretty much hereditary unless there is an underlying medical issue. The light bulb is not at fault.

Four things cause baldness:
  1. Male hormone
  2. Hereditary baldness syndromes
  3. Traction
  4. Chemical/radiation exposure
The only ones that are reversible is #3 and #4, so unless you're wearing a hat/headband or you're on chemotherapy, your baldness is probably not reversible and has no relationship to light/heat exposure.

Hair loss can also be attributed to thyroid conditions.

Oh alright...
What about poor diet or anything like that?

Diet will make hair fragile and thin. But it won't make it fall out unless you're severely malnourished.

there are also medications that will make your hair fall out. i can't recall which ones. a friend of mine was on a special medication to treat her adult acne and after about 3 months her hair started thinning noticeably. She started to notice a lot of hair in the shower. then people around her started to notice it was thinning. Then her treatment ended and once she was off the medication it started to come back (but slowly).

speaking of hair loss, i used to take propecia and i used rogaine to treat my hair loss. i didn't start losing mine until i was about 27 or so. but today i got my first hair piece. :)

if you have noticed the thin spot, then it's likely you've already lost about 50% of the hairs in that particular area. It takes about that much of a loss before you viably see it. If it's not been too long the rogain foam and propecia can help you keep what you have and may be regrow some of what you've lost. unless the follicle has died already. once it dies that's that.

Damn this sucks...
I'm not even 20 and I'm going bald?

Looking at the other men in your family, especially on your mother's side, gives you a bit of indication of what you can expect.

Losing your hair at any age sucks, but it's not the end of the world either. You can look good with any length hair or none at all. More important is how you carry yourself.
