... is apparently trying his damndest to get me in trouble with the boss. He's been leaving notes for my boss about me not doing enough work and leaving early. If he'd just bother to ask me, he'd know I showed up at 5am so I could leave early. I think he's trying to get me fired.

So now, the job I was excited about is a job I hate. :(

Sorry to hear that. I'm pretty sure you'll meet a lot of assholes that will be an ass to you when you take a new job.

I have a few at my job that do that to. They run to the boss with every little thing I do wrong, but yet they can get away with murder! I just go to work do my job the best I can, and let the brown nosers do their thing!
Sorry to hear about your troubles, hope it get better for you!

In my experience.. most bosses are totally aware when someone is blowing smoke up their asses.

you might wanna have a word with him, though... it's quite easy to turn this guy against himself.

I'm hoping this is the case. He wrote me a letter confronting me for not putting in enough hours today and also left a copy for my boss. I just responded by leaving my boss a different note, discussing all of the problems with the new software and what I did to fix them. I didn't mention G at all. I'm hoping to end up looking better in the long run.

When I worked at HMV in Toronto there was this bitch who had it in for me.

She would go storming into my bosses office complaing about the job I was doing.. complaining about everything I did.. most of it made up or exaggerated to ridiculous lengths.

He'd politely listen to her and tell her "I'll have a word with him" but I never heard a peep about it until long after she gave up and quit.

He told me that she'd constantly try to get me in trouble but he saw right through her and didn't want to bother me with it.

Loved that guy.

Does your boss know you are coming in early? Just be sure he is aware you come in early so you can leave early. If you haven't discussed it with him, mention it soon. "Boss, I've been coming in early at 6 a.m. and leaving about 2:30 or 3 p.m. . I stay current with my work and if I need to stay late for a meeting or to complete a project, it is not a problem. I've been meaning to ask you if you have any objection if I continue these hours." This makes him aware of your hours and if he prefers you to work other hours, he can voice that preference. It is all about communication. Now he knows your status and you will learn if he has an issue with your schedule. If he does have a problem with your schedule, ask him what is the earliest you can arrive for work or his preference for your hours. BTW, didn't you discuss this when you were hired?

There are people in this world who are so bitter and unhappy that the only way they can make themselves feel well is to tarnish others. It sounds like you found yourself one of those little unhappy turds. You're doing the right thing by outlining the work you did do and why. Hang in there Mister. You will win this one, you just have to be patient and let the turd hang himself.

I managed programmers for years and it is fairly easy to tell who's doing their job and who isn't. I've also dealt with plenty of brown nosers who try to tell the boss everything. In my case, they were always the last people I would listen to. Unfortunately I have seen other managers who fall for this bs. When you return to work, I would just ask the boss if he has a minute. Tell him you don't want to make a big deal out of X's letter, but you want to be sure he understands that you have been coming in at 5am so that you can work for a few hours without distraction (sounds much better than coming in early so that you can leave early). Ask him if he is satisfied with your work and if there is anything else you need to be doing.

Please remember that you are new to the company and haven't built your reputation yet. People do notice those who tend to leave early and it is often intepreted as a lack of dedication. Perception is sometimes more important than reality. There's an old saying on how to get ahead, arrive before your boss and leave after him. If you are trying to build a career, don't sell yourself short for a little extra free time in the evening. The time I have to interact with employees is typically the end of the day. If you're not there, you don't get the face time. During those causal interactions is often where ideas are formed about who is right to work on which project.

I don't understand why this would make you hate your job. No matter where you work, you are going to have to deal with issues like this. Your manager will be watching to see how you handle it and your should view this as an opportunity to impress your boss. Remember, employers are looking for team players.

Did you set your own hours or did your boss agree to you starting early if he did then its up to your boss to deal with this asshole. and let you know not to worry about him .

I think you're getting some good responses! Try not to let one malcontent can make you feel bad about a job you really liked!
