I'm currently helping an older citizen with some memory problems get his older iMac running tiger on line and functioning. He bought this machine from a used equipment auction at a local school. The system came set up with Tiger, and of course a school administrator.

I've set the computer up so he is the new administrator but the fastname is still listed as the original school administrator. This confuses him, and he keeps trying to eliminate the administrator which is causing problems in accessing his administrator account, not remembering that he should leave it alone.

I haven't been able to make his fastname the one the system recognizes, because it is always grayed out even when the dialog box is unlocked. Any ideas how I can correct this?

I don't want to clean the disc and reinstall, as he has spent days painstakingly inputting his address book, and call signs of his shortwave radio contacts. This is his only pleasure, and I'd like to help him get it the way he wants it so it doesn't confuse him.

He could always burn the address book and radio contacts to a cd. Then reinstall the OS and then import those files from the CD. If there is a lot of info, I suggest he use a DVD instead.

I have never found where it is stored. I put in a new hard drive and it still found the old stuff. Another thing when im about to send an email it comes up with addys ive deleted from my address book.
Anybody??

or try system preferences/accounts select him then click on Login options then automatic login and select his name

Did you setup a new account and removed the old one? You should be able to do this. You can also set a root pw was well if need be. In fact you might try doing that then use the shell to go to the /Users folder and see if the old account is still there.

yeah, I did that. His account is the only one visible, but the fastname on his account hasn't changed from the previous administrator's, and it is grayed out and apparently no changable.
