Been out since that storm hit the Midwest. Local authority is saying it will be at least Wednesday before they finish repairs. But now it's been storming every day so they're saying there will be further delays.

According to apocalyptic movies, 3 days is when people start turning on each other.

Should we prepare to defend ourselves from gangs of marauders?

You have our empathy.

We just went through this after the ice storm last weekend and as I noted in another thread...I had totally fucked up as far as being prepared.

Not enough dry firewood. The main cable for the gen set frozen in ice and buried under fallen tree limbs.

We just curled up an hid in bed wrapped in feather comforters with the cats.

Hopefully it won't be Wednesday.

But now the US is being hammered again so emergency crews are going to be so overstretched.

Being without power sucks. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I've been there. Good luck. Last time it happened, I finally got my refrigerator cleaned out.

Extended power failures are miserable. I'm in an area where there have been several, although--thankfully nothing like four days. The worst I've been through was about 60 hours. But there have been winter outages of "only" 24 hours or so that forced me to take refuge at a neighbors (which had woodstove).

I am wishing I had a better setup to get through power failures. Maybe I'm just being negative, but I'm wondering if in coming years power failures won't be more of an issue, as the county continues falling apart at the seams.

My family and friends are being drowned (figuratively) in Arkansas.

It's the Gulf of America. It's getting vengeance for the shame it's endured.

And the Midwest is definitely responsible.

Having power outtage isn't fun hopefully it will be fixed soon for you

Of course. Smartphones rely on signals from masts though and I imagined that if power was out the masts would be affected.

Generators.

I know nothing about where he lives, but here, that's how I know if the problem is just for me, or if the entire neighbourhood is without power -- I open my bedroom window and listen for the tower generators.

I live on the second highest peak in the area, and secluded -- can't see if others have lights.

What a relief. I've only endured two days without power and it was wintertime.
Truth be told, it was annoying but not life threatening for us. I'd been collecting batteries for occasions like this one. So, we got the furnace and fridge running that whole time. And we were able to hotspot our phones to watch Netflix and play games.

The batteries needed a couple hours to charge up. So, everyday we ran the generator for a couple hours to charge the batteries and we were good to go for the next 22 hours.

Those are 6ah batteries. Got about 25 of them. The power station setup of 4 batteries managed to run the furnace and fridge for about 6 hours each time. We just took turn swapping out the batteries as needed.

After this ordeal, I'm gonna start buying 12ah batteries so we don't have to wake up super early to swap out the batteries.

That was an annoying 5 days.

Wow, 25 of them! Do you use them for your mowers also? I'm "invested" in the Hart brand (sold only at walmart) and I use a 6ah and a 4ah for a string trimmer, lawn edger, and snow thrower (not blower). The 6am I bought at the end of 2023 lawn season was $200 for store clearance at $98.

I got one of those inverters like you show in the photo above (powering the TV). I've only used it once during a power outage of about 40 minutes. I was disappointed at the time that since all I had plugged into it was a powered up laptop that was also charging it's low battery. Later I got to thinking that maybe the battery was not fully changed since it had been sitting all winter in my house waiting for an outage to try it out.
