After my third case of tonsillitis in the last year or so, this time being the worst, my doctor has said I need my tonsils removed, otherwise its going to keep reoccurring and cause nothing but trouble. I had glandular fever (Mono) a few years ago, which started all my problems, and now I'm so sick of it, I just want them out. I'm currently in Japan at the moment, and won't be back in Aus until April, and then I'd have to wait a few months to get it done on the public system, so it's still a way off yet, but I was wondering if anyone else has had their tonsils removed as an adult. I've read that its much more painful as an adult.

Anyone want to share their experience?

It is more painful, but does not last long and you get to eat all the ice cream you want and a few days off from work!

They only hurt after you wake up from the surgery. That's the beauty of it, otherwise it would be much more painful if you are conscious and awake during the surgery.

You get wheeled into the OR. Lots of people in green around you. They comfort you, you are asleep before you know it.

You come to, they are saying HI, how are you, stroking your hand, they wheel you off to a recovery room, you stay there for an hour or so, then let you go, then...ICECREAM or SORBET...

YUM....

You will be ok my friend, nothing to be feared.

Don

I'm 21 and will be getting mine out on the 8th of January. I'll let you know all the gory details!

im a nurse in the OT here in OZ... its a simple procedure and takes about 30 -40 mins generally... depends on the surgeon etc...
Did you see a Dr in japan that recommended you have them out??? i was thinking if you did maybe he/she can send a referral to a Surgeon in your area ( in aus) and they can put you on the list now for may 2008... so by the time you come home... you already on the list... just a lil advice... i myself havent had my tonsils removed but tonnes of adults get it done!! ... any questions or wanna know more hit me up mate! You will be fine

I had it done at age 16 - hurt like hell for a few days afterward. The ice cream trick didn't do anything for me b/c it hurt so bad to swallow anything for a few days.

But I had some great drugs that helped and I really haven't had a sore throat since.

Is there a reason you won't have it done in Japan? I'm sure the medical system there is just as effective as back in Australia.

Thanks for your advice guys :)

hmmm that's a good idea - yeah my doctor in Japan recommended I have it done, I'll have to see about getting a referral. Cause I'd like not to have to wait around too long in Aus.

And the reason I'm not getting it done here is cause it'd be far too expensive as I"m not sure my insurance would cover it here (not really emergency). At home I can get it done on the public system at least.
