5 December 2024 - a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the Northern California coast triggered a tsunami warning - which was cancelled, but not before sending coastal Californian residents into a panic.

Offshore earthquakes along the west coast of the United States leave little time to warn costal residents, so tsunami alerts are usually automatic - to err on the side of safety.

 
Rather know that people were in a panic than that they weren't properly forewarned.
 
We got the alert in Oregon and Washington, buy that was more of an F.Y.I.
Traffic in Northern California was tied in knots for hours.
