Two desktops on the same screen.

I just have bought a brand new 19 inch monitor. Because it's too wide and I use the computer mainly for programming and text editing, I want to split the screen to visualize two desktops as if I were working with two different computers. Do you know any (free or cheap) software to do it?

I'm using Windows Vista (:() with Intel Core 2 Quad 2.6 GHz processor. 4 GB RAM.

This is what I find using google but links don't work or point to XP systems:

So you have your regular monitor and now have a 19" monitor, in addition..

Have you get both monitors working?
As far as I was aware, you just needed a graphics processor (card) that is capable of powering two monitors at the same time..

Is that what you mean?!
Sorry, if I have been absolutely no help, Luis (which is quite likely). :( !oops!

I interpreted Luis's message as meaning he has one new single monitor. On that single monitor, because it's so wide, he wants the appearance of two fresh Windows' working sessions.

I haven't heard of this but I'm curious how it could be done. I guess a question would be whether you're running two different visual arrangements of the same Windows' session or you're running "another" Windows session beside, as some sort of VM thing.

Ohhhhhhh, One monitor, and split THAT into two seperate screens.

Got it!! #-o - Well, I've never heard or known that possible, so it's time for me to just sit back and watch, hahaha! !oops!

Yes. That's the idea. ..|

I already knew that, but I don't want "virtual" desktops. I want to show two different desktops at the same time on the same screen. Like having two parallel windows but more general.

Sorry for my english. I can't do it better :(

Oooops. I didn't see your edit. Let me some (a lot of) time to check the links. Many, many thanks.

By the way Luis, your English is fine, and you actually explained it fine; I was just a klutz, and totally misread what you were saying! #-o !oops!

Woulden't you just resize your windows to fit two like this

or this is how i normally have mine

_AJ_, I had a really zen-like moment there seeing screenshots of you composing the text of the actual message you ended up with here. :) Trippy. Sort of like that thing with an anchorman and a TV beside showing that same image and the TV-in-a-TV-in-a-TV thing goes as far down infinity as you can make it out on-screen.

It's easy to resize the windows in Vista. Just right click on the task bar and select "View parallel" or something like that. But you have to redo it everytime you open a new window. I want something more "automatic".

This seems to be the solution... I'm gonna try it!

"Acer Gridvista devides your screen into two, three or four sections in which you can drag & drop windows. The windows will then be automatically resized. You can also set a window to be always on top or semi-transparent."

AJ, "ctm5100 - Manhunt.net"?

I think the question is whether more than one program window can be displayed simultaneously on the same monitor, which is trivial to do by resizing the windows. I have a 23"monitor, so I don't consider a 19" monitor to be that wide. When running multiple programs, I prefer to use the alt-tab keystroke to switch between them rather than displaying the program windows simultaneously. At work, I have two separate monitors, which is convenient.

i believe nvidia has a software that will allow you to do that - with nvidia cards only of course ;)
