Britney Spears were offered "Umbrella" according to the Redzone Entertainment (producers of "Umbrella")
But Rihanna took it
I remember the same thing happened with Genie in a bottle that Britney offered it first
I'm so seeing britney singing Umbrella

Umbrella was offered to alot of people before Rihanna. I read somewhere that Jennifer Lopez, Mary J Blige, Usher, and Britney were all offered it. But they passed even though Mary did showed a little more interest in it.

Thank God she passed. I really like the song, and I would hate to hear that fake electronically-altered sound she often has. I know many artists are tweaked in the studio to sound better, but it shouldn't come out sounding so cold and inhuman, which is what most of her later work has been for me.

rihanna made that song, love it, can't imagine anyone else singing it really

I also read it was offered to a Jamaican comedienne too. Doesn't matter who it was offered to, Rihanna got it eventually.

Yea, I couldnt imagine anyone else singing it. And if someone else had done it, we wouldnt have gotten Jay's verse on it. "This is Roc-A-Fella, we fly higher than weather, in G5's or better." Jay is a beast on the mic!

Oh... no he's not.

Sorry. He was a beast. Was. I just don't like him - haven't since The Blueprint.

...too bad he's one of the few rappers half worth a damn out there.

He's changed, doesnt rap about the same stuff, but no one is as clever or able to switch flows like Jay. Even in that throw away freestlye over the Ballin beat when he went at Jimmy and Cam - In the second verse he switched flows like 3 or 4 times. Thats hammertime right there. Cant touch it. lol.

Although, I think Im one of the few that, with the exception of two songs, loved Kingdom Come from front to back.

"I dont got one gun on me/I got a sum on me to hire a gun army/ get you spun like laundry/ and Ill be somewhere under palm trees/ calmly/ listening to r&b/ when we get the call he's/ no longer with us/ fire ya baby sitters."

Dude is still NICE Jy Star! :)

Just like "...Baby One More Time" and Mary J. Blige's "Rainy Dayz" were originally written for TLC, but they turned both down.

It's interesting how it all works out.

I wonder what she would have done with Umbrella...

Clever. I'll give you that about him.

But i just got a personal vendetta against him, he thinks he's one of the best... and he really, really isn't. And with rap in its current state... its not like he has much competition...

Hahaa, least you didn't bitch at me like other super fans! :D

offtopic:

lol, Never that. It's never that serious. ;)

LMAO. Thats hilarious!

THANK GOD she turned it down, and the others as well. This song was made for Rhianna.

But alot of artists are offered different songs, but it ultimately lands in the correct artist's hands.

I think she would have done great with the song. It's not a song where you have to have that great of vocals to sing, so she could have made it great. Rihanna doesn't have the best voice. Anyone could sing that song.

bet they all were kicking themselves in the ass when they saw it nu,ber one on billboard for like...how many weeks was it?

^ 7 weeks and its still number 1 on the European Music Charts. It spend 10 record breaking weeks on the UK charts and simultaneously went number 1 in over 15 countries.

10 consecutive weeks @ number 1 in the UK and

7 weeks in the US

and 7 weeks on the world united charts

and 8 weeks @ number 1 on the European Charts,

and 5 weeks @ number one the Canadian charts

and 7 weeks at number 1 on the Australian charts?
Umbrella simultaneously topped the UK, Canadian, Irish, German, United States, Australian, New Zealand, Polish, French, Austrian,Barbadian, Italian, Greek, Caribbean, Belgian, Norwegian and Swiss charts, along with the United World Chart?

LOL

Ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.

Just what we need, another Umbrella thread. I love me some Brit but lets be honest this is Rihannas song, she made it her own, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh. Every artist has a signature, sometimes record breaking song and Umbrella is Rihannas.

LOL, I remember Milkshake was offered to Britney as well and she turned it down for another song produced by the neptunes. Britney really needs to get a better ear for music LOL.....Oh well I still love her.

ETA S.O.S was offered to Christina Millian first as well, and she turned it down. I guess Rihanna has a good ear, good for her LOL.

This is funny. Practically every song seems to be offered to Britney first. What's next on the news? Like A Virgin was written for her too?

Come on, this sort of stuff is standard. They shop songs around, and see if anyone's interested. It's easy in retrospect to say "Oh, she passed on a hit." It was only a hit after it was recorded and produced. When it's a demo, it usually sounds really different, and it's not immediately obvious that there's a hit there.

hmmm i really dont see Britney singing UMBRELLA... love her, hate her, Britney is easy target for everything right now. She will do fine on her own once she gets new album out.... hopefully!

Sometimes people get the better end of the deal. Jennifer Lopes' 'Play' was co-written, originally produced by and sung by Christina Milian, and it's clearly her singing the verse. But she passed on it. Same as Dolly Parton's 'I will always love you' was originally for Elvis before she sang it herself.
