Whats everyone's pick for the winners

Women's has been pretty open on one half coz of all the upsets and the other half as expected has been dominated by serena

I would love for it to be a clijsters-wozniacki final but i don't know if kim has enough left in the tank to defeat serena but i think caroline should be able to overcome oudin although it would be great for her to win as well

the men's side has always bored me in reagrds to the fact that federer's domination has kinda made everything predictable. wouldnt mind seeing djokovic make the final

djokovic is through to the semis i'm all for him as for the women i'll go with clijsters...so bored with serena winning everything

Yes, the foot-fault call against her was ridiculous, but Serena acted like an idiot during her match with Clijsters. She should feel really embarrassed. Oh, and that line judge should be fired.

P.S. I hope that Nole beats Federer, but I'm sure that Federer will kick his ass. We'll see.

I have a feeling that Nadal may well struggle against del Potro.

Hopefully Fed will beat Djokovic. A Fed v del Potro final could be interesting...

Without having seen close up detail of the foot fault on Serena, I can't comment on it's accuracy - but her outburst was totally out of line. If she wanted to appeal the ruling, she had correct avenues to do so. The point penalty was just - tho' the last time I can recall seeing a big match like that end in such a way was MacEnroe, many years ago.

If Clijsters has the guns to take Serena to match point anyway - I would think she ought to overpower Wozniacki.

Very wise, TriBi!!(ww)

Poor Nadal, but lovely Juan Martin del Potro - sweet and gracious and beautiful.

Out of curiosity, does anybody know if an unranked player has ever won a Grand Slam title?

Along the same lines, the fact that Clijsters has had such a spectacular return to the women's game (even if she doesn't win in a few hour's time) surely shows a real lack in depth and consistency that is so much more apparent in the men's side. I suspect that if Kim can manage what Serena has not - consistency (and fire) in the smaller non-GS tournaments, she could have a major impact in the rankings.

i remember goran ivanisevic won wimbledon over patrick rafter with a wildcard and that guy who i couldn't remember his name beating marcelo rios at australian open anyway hurray for kim she finally did it and too bad for noel i hate federer !!!

Boris Becker was unseeded when he won his first Grand Slam (Wimbledon, IIRC). Similarly, and quite a few years earlier, (1976?) Mark Edmondson came out of the blue to win the Australian Open. I'm sure there have been others - Oh - and they also reported that Clijsters is the first ever wild card to win the US Open.

¡¡¡VIVA LA ARGENTINA!!!

From the front page of The New York Times:
Juan Martín del Potro of Argentina did what seemed to be the unthinkable on Monday night, beating Roger Federer in a dramatic five-set match to win the United States Open for his first major championship, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

The big-serving, 6-foot-6 del Potro ended Federer’s remarkable string of five consecutive Open singles championships and, at 20 years old, signaled that he is ready to challenge Federer and Rafael Nadal, whom del Potro beat in the semifinal on Sunday to reach the final, as the game’s top player.

I'm not surprised that Federer lost, but I am surprised about how he lost. Wow @ Juan Martin.

I couldn't watch the matches here (no TV coverage) but followed what I could on the website live score. I thought the mens match could well be a cracker - and it looks as if it was & (from news report) that Roger, VERY unusually, lost his cool at one stage.

Nice to see Clijsters stir things up with her wildcard win in the women's final as well!

Women's tennis sucks, men's tennis is awesome. I think that's the conclusion I've drawn from this US Open. Grats to Del Potro.
