My old (very, very, very old!) keyboard finally decided it was time to retire and I bought a new keyboard with a few more keys and a USB attachment. Windows had to install some drivers and stuff when I hooked it up, but now, each time I turn on the computer in the morning, the 3 lights on the keyboard flash once and go out again. The keyboard won't work until I unplug it and plug it back in.

Anyone know what's going on and how I fix it?

When you installed the new software for the keyboard, did you reboot the computer?? That could be one reason for the problem. If you did not reboot, the computer still doesn't know the keyboard is connected, which may explain why you have to keep reconnecting it. The computer must "see" the keyboard in the bootup sequence.

Yes, it was rebooted automatically. I forgot to mention that I run Windows98 SE. Could the drivers be too old to recognize the new keyboards? If so, how do I find the new drivers to download and install?

Oh no...Windows 98SE rears its ugly head again! That probably explains the issue. Any chance you could update your version of Windows? That would save you a lot of grief in the long term. Short of that, the only suggestion I could make is to visit the Microsoft Support site for Windows 98SE and see if they have a resolution for USB issues.

My system is too old and small to allow anything larger than Win98. Believe me, I've tried. And I can't afford to upgrade my system. I'm stuck with it.

I thought about Microsoft, but I didn't think they supported Win98 anymore. I'll do some checking around. I just wasn't sure what to look for.

Thanks, guy. I appreciate your help.

Thanks again. I think I got the one I need. I don't think I would have found it by myself. (*8*)

The installation from Microsoft seems to be working. I'll know for certain tomorrow morning when I boot up.

Thanks, guys.

Oh, and provenlogic, sorry I missed your message. It's an AOpen keyboard. It has 3 new keys I've never seen before: Power, Sleep, and Wake. Is it necessary to use them to shut down the computer or are they there for convenience?

No, but it's helpful to know in case you had to install software to use it. Most USB keyboards need driver software to function properly, and if it's out of date, or you just didn't install it, it's probably a good idea to download and install the latest version of the software.

No drivers came with the keyboard. That installation I did from Microsoft didn't work. I still had to unplug the keyboard and plug it back in again this morning. I'll see if I can track down drivers for it today.

Thanks again.
