Utility Service at 1:00 AM

There is a neighborhood internet site for a few local suburbs and someone posted that there had been a gas leak on their street and the utility company had been working several hours to repair it. At 1:00 AM a worker knocked on their door because they had it fixed and were turning the gas back on and were going to all of the houses checking their furnaces, stoves, and whatever to make sure they were all working properly again. Some people said they wouldn't have answered the door at 1:00 AM and it isn't safe to do so, but this person said that their furnace had been off for several hours and their house was getting cold so they let them in. 1:00 AM, Yikes! not sure what I would have done if someone was at my door at that time, but if I knew that they were working in the neighborhood and my house was cold, I suppose that I would.

There are probably many older gas appliances still in use that have flame pilot lights. They are supposed to have safety shut offs, but they are not always reliable. Many people have died because of them.

Day or night, there I'd nothing like the Police knocking on your door telling you to evacuate the house.

A new house being built on our block last Spring when a backhoe hit a main gas pipe. I was almost as worried that someone might light a match on stuffed cabbage night.

We walked with some neighbors 2 blocks away and talked for about an hour or do before the let us come back .
