Just before the forums vanished mysteriously today, I got a Pop-up : "Warning Your system is infected with a dangerous virus" things. I don't know if the two occurrences are even related. My firewalls and Anti Virus are up to date and I just closed the warning window (and a subsequent, smaller "are you sure window"). I've had this happen a couple of times before. Do I need to boil my computer?

Was it soley whilst viewing JUB, or have you been looking at other sites simultaneously?

It seems likely to be malware causing this. Would you like me to move this thread over to the Tech Forum?

Sure, move it. I think that I only had JUB and my web mail open on the same Firefox window.

thanks

Thread moved ;)

Maybe it was something in the webmail?

It was only my ISP webmail inbox page. I may have had the NYT and another main stream news window open. As I said, there may be no association. Just coincidence?
When I googled "Virus pop up warning" there are all sorts of suggestions. from not to worry to OMG you're screwed. My computer seems to be working fine. As I said this has happened to me a couple of times before (when I was checking out a webcam for a Pizza shop in Provincetown). I did a complete scan and don't recall anything about the results. I guess I'll do one again unless one of you tech guys have some other suggestion. thanks A

If it wasn't your antivirus that was sounding the bells and whistles, it's most likely some sort of script in the webpage that's produced a pop up with a fake warning. And if you click on it and are taken to some site somewhere, that's prolly where the real trouble might be...

However, other folks might give you a better second opinion. Sorry I'm not much help :(

SW is probably right, a script in something. Just to be safe I would run a full virus and a full spyware scan. Smart move though to not click on anything when you get those.

Next time take a screen shot and post it. It would help to actually see what you got. To take a screen shot hit the "print screen" button on the upper right of the keyboard (you won't see anything happen when you do this). Then open up Windows Paint or some other photo program and hit Cntl-V to paste the shot, then do "save as" to save it as jpg.

They are not related. You still should check it out though ;)

I had it too!!

I had gay.com and another video site open at the time... I think it was gotgayporn.com... Needless to say, a system restore and a full scan were in order!

Thanks all for responding and help. Have completed all sorts of malware and virus scans with no found problems. Apparently it was just a very "official looking" pop up ad that is supposed to frighten you into buying some bogus anti- malware software. The danger is if you clicked on the ad and actually purchased the stuff. I had copied the URL for the ad the last time in case I needed to send it in to my AV company for identifying.

Was something like this:
warning15.jpg

Yep, that's it. Fake AV software trying to scare you into buying something you don't need and infecting you at the same time. Despicable.

You can get everything you need to protect yourself for free. There is no need to pay for spyware and virus protection.

I had the same thing happen to me in november. I clicked on the 'yes tab' to clean it and it downloaded software that asked me every 10 mins to pay with a credit card to clean my computer.
I had my computer cleaned and the tech guy put on a new firewall. I havent had that issue since. Run a full scan and clean that off your computer at once. Good luck.
