Can someone straighten this out for me? I read in one sex book that the bag of worms feel near the left testicle is fairly common and goes away several years after puberty. I'm 21 and have been experiencing erection difficulties even after going on testosterone. But then several websites have pointed out that people who have varicoceles removed through surgery experience an increases in testosterone production around 30%. To test whether your "worms" are unhealthy or not your supposed to stand up and grab these dialted blood vessels and push like your having a bowel movement and if these vessels swell then you have varicocle's and if they don't then they are benign. So who am I to believe? Mine swell and I have been on testosterone therapy for about a year with some success but not much.
Are these benign or bad?
Also do any men on here have no sexual problems but also have these veins that swell?
Mine don't ever hurt which is the symptom that makes doctors reccomend surgery usually, until then they don't bother.

You should see a doctor. Are you experiencing dull pain or heaviness in your scrotum? It's not uncommon to have varicoceles into your mid to late 20s, but you should definitely be checked out as soon as possible to rule out any malignant causes of it in your case.

Testerosterone won't do anything for your varicoceles. Are you taking it just for your erection difficulties?

no, I was getting tired during the day and depressed. I had low testosterone and every symptom that goes along with that not just erections. I have started taking iodine and some other supplements along with the testosterone. Its working better after taking iodine but its still not 100%. I'm 21 btw.

that's what I had read several times so that's why I thought they were no big deal.
I thought a large portion of the young male population had them.

i had alot of big veins in my left one as a kid.. my left ball was HUGE and did NOT look normal and hurt... was a hurnia! its normal now

Varicocele is actually very common. And are rarely dangerous. they could be left alone but if it's bothering you then you could get it fixed.

I've done some research about it as i have em myself. At one point something on my left nut hurt when it gets touched but it resolved itself in a few weeks. I don't know what causes em but they just go away!

But I'd go to a doctor if I was you and you're having a difficult time getting an erection. All the best

They very well may. Your veins are enlarged because there is too much backwards pressure from the downstream veins going up into your abdomen. Fresh blood flows from your heart to your testicles to pick up the hormones it produces, but since the blood in the veins is backed up, not much of those hormones can be delivered it to the rest of your body where they are needed for the control of sexual function and reproduction. Subsequently, you can develop erectile dysfunction, impotence, and infertility.

Again, you should definitely go to a urologist about your problem before it's too late, especially since you are already experiencing problems with getting an erection and have low endogenous testosterone in your system. You are still considered very young, so your symptoms will likey subside shortly after treatment. I would suggest you talk to your doctor about varicocele embolization (widening the larger vein in the abdomen to reduce backwards pressure) instead of having the conventional surgery (cutting off several of the enlarged veins in your srotum) since it is much easier to do, has a lot less risk of complications (no general anaesthesia), and a very short recovery time (you're released the same day).

I have a varicocele without any sort of sexual performance problems. I noticed it a couple years ago, but after visiting a urologist (and having to pay like $250 for 5 minutes with the doc) he informed me that surgery wasn't recommended because I didn't have any pain symptoms. Also, he mentioned that I'd probably had it since puberty but just hadn't noticed it before.

They can affect your fertility, but unless you're trying to have kids and not succeeding, it's not really a problem.

UPDATE!!!
I finally got an appointment with a supposedly great urologist today who specializes in varicocele treatment. He told me that I should probably get it treated and get the surgery done but said it would not improve my impotence or testosterone. How can that be? If your veins are backed up and they can't carry blood in and out of your testicles how could that not affect anything? That just doesn't make any sense!
Plus one of the health books I have says they are dangerous. There's hundreds of personal accounts of men who had them fixed and stopped experiencing impotence and low testosterone. Who's right?
I'm going to get it fixed and see what happens. Also the urologist said I should stop taking the testosterone because it would make me sterile (I'm bi by the way, so that's important) but I went to a great endocronologist who went to ucla! I tend to favor the endocronoglist over the urologist. To top it all off he gave me a prescription for viagra to make up for discontinuing the testosterone. What an idiot.

I'm on testosterone replacement and have been for years. I don't have vericocele's but my body just doesn't make enough testosterone. I treated with endocronology and urology at The Mayo Clinic and neither of them said anything about sterility. Infact I am the father of 2 children and we did not have any trouble getting pregnant. I know if I stop the testosterone replacement I go through a terrible depression, mood swings and have a terrible time thinking clearly. I lose all interest in sex and wouldn't be able to get an erection if my life depended on it. If I use the replacement as perscribed I don't have any problems. I'm not a doctor and don't pretend to be one but I would have a hard time just stopping the replacement and taking Viagra. Viagra won't help with depression or energy levels.

Hope you are able to get this figured out.

Yeah I figure the urologist isn't well versed in the new forms of testosterone. I've been off of the testosterone for three days but I think I will at least continue to do al little bit because the urologist seems in no hurry to do the operation. The Endocrinologist (while not a urologist) was floored that she did not catch the varicocele a year ago and believes that a varicocele embolization will raise my testostereone. I agree totally I went to several idiotic doctors who claimed my impotence was psychological although they couldn't explain why I didn't get any in my sleep. The testosterone makes me think so clearly I think my i.q. jumped 10 points.
the moral of this story is keep going to different doctors until you get an answer. If they tell you your problem is psychological then you need to run not walk to a new doctor. My testicles were physcially examined by five doctors over the course of two years when I gave them my various symptoms and not One of them caught the fact that I had tangled up veins almost equivalent to the size of one of my testicles in my scrotum. I had to diagnose myself before I even got a partial answer.
WHAT A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!!

my understanding is that raising your testosterone above the average range may make you sterile but not if your supplementation just raises you in average territory.

i do get an inflamed feeling in the testicle tubes on the left side which lasts several hours. if i wank more than 3 times a day or have sex HARD or with my biggest effort or a very big erection.

can't wear any tight underpants as there like a ultra ultra sensitive place on my left scrotum side that makes me teeth grind with pain if anything hard rubs on it like a seam on pants.

had this problem since i was 19 when i was attacked and kicked in the balls very hard with steel toe boots. i think i either had testicle torsion or even a ruptured testicle then. now 24.

but is 'fine' if i don't wank too much, don't have sex hard and wear boxers.

seen the doctors, and fucking hell i do NOT want another physical check down there again. pain was very very extreme, i threw up badly and grinded my teeth with it.
doctor found nothing apparently.

had an ultrasound down there and nothing showed up....

so maybe it's like a muscle spasm... but i think it's something worse to not go after so many years.

would go for further tests, but too shit scared to, but would rather jump off a cliff than have a physical examination on my balls again. as the pain was THAT bad.

would only dare myself to have it investigated more thoroughly, if i was on some kind of strong painkiller(ie: codeine) the day they did it..... otherwise it's just torture.

try that sweetie.

if nothing helps them you may need to brave another doctor or 2, or maybe try a holistic therapist, alternative therapies could be less painful

Trauma  History is key, for example, an acute blow, or bicycle riding. The scrotum may be swollen and tender, resembling torsion. Trauma can cause a contusion, hematoma (or hematoceole), or rupture of the testis.

^^^ you said something about an bad attack and injury, maybe?

but if it persists then you do need to see a doctor.

Go see a doctor, but tell him what you've just told us about your previous experience--your extreme reluctance to experience all that pain again. Don't agree to an examination until they've provided you with some sort of accommodation, which will probably mean some sort of sedatives or painkillers beforehand.
