Nicki Minaj & Keri Hilson To Headline VH1’s “Divas”: WTF?

The line-up for VH1’s “Divas” 2010 was announced today.

And though we love Keri Hilson (and can see the potential in Nicki Minaj), we’re not so sure the two ladies should be headlining such an event.

VH1 caught a lot of flack last year for it’s line-up. After all, “Divas” had been on hiatus since 2005, so VH1 had had plenty of time to prep and plan for an amazing comeback.

Instead, it returned in 2009 with a line-up full of “American Idol” contestants. Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson and Adele took the stage.

Now, the issue wasn’t that these ladies couldn’t sing – because, surely, they can – the issue was that it seemed the original intent and vision of VH1 “Divas” had been lost.

When VH1 first introduced the show in 1998, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain performed. These were women that had earned their right, in their respective genres, to be named a diva.

VH1 “Divas” held it’s standards high for the following years: in 1999, we saw Whitney, Tina, and Cher – women who, to this day, need no last name.

In 2000, Mariah returned with Donna Summer. In 2001, the three “Queens” came – of Soul, of Hip-Hop and of Salsa, it was Aretha, Mary J., and Celia Cruz.

Then there was trouble. From 2002 to 2003, we saw Cher, Celine and Whitney – AGAIN! And we saw Mary TWICE more.

Thankfully, Beyonce, Patti, Chaka, and Gladys Knight came through to break up the monotony, but it wasn’t enough to keep “Divas” going. They took a break in 2005 until the infamous 2009 show mentioned above.

The 2010 show seems worst than the last: Katy Perry, Keri Hilson, Nicki Minaj, country group Sugarland, and alternative-rock band Paramore will be headlining the event, airing December 5.

VH1’s own website says that “‘Divas’ brings together music’s most powerful women and greatest performers live on one stage.” Maybe they need to re-read their mission statement.

....[-X......VH1 need to let it go...I LOVE Sugaland but I'd rather see them with their own special and not associted with "Divas Live"....

The Divas today should contain:

Beyonce, GaGa, Christina A., P!nk, and yes even Britney...

This is sad. They'll call anyone a diva nowadays. Katy Perry? Seriously? Paramore? Come on!

And besides...wtf is Nicki Minaj going to sing? She only has one song out!

You forgot that Divas 2000 was a tribute to the truest of all Divas ---Diana Ross!!!!!!!!!

LOL @ bands with men in it having to perform on a show called Divas Live.

The only redeeming feature of this fiasco will be that it is a benefit concert for music education programs in schools.

I wonder if Money has anything to do with the past few line-ups?

All they need to do is produce a Tribute for Tina Turner..They'd have no problems getting call-backs from some of the best Young & Old female vocalists begging to perform..

As many said... it takes a lot to be a diva. Not just 1 million hits on YouTube.

There are women in the industry who changed music history, who created art and whose name is more than the current news.

How did Katy Perry, Gaga or Nicki Minaj do anything for music history? They're career is no longer than Rihanna's or Justin Bieber's (he will be a diva by 2020 maybe :P).

There are few singers in modern pop who can really be called divas.

This is the worst lineup ever! Like someone said earlier a good lineup would be Beyonce, Christina A, Pink and maybe some veteran divas like Patti LaBelle and Barbra Streissand. Then again maybe they asked those people and they didn't want to do it.

From Mariah, Celine, Gloria, Shania, Aretha to Keri Hilson and the likes... and I thought it couldn't get worse than last year's Miley Cyrus and Jordin Spark.

I hear Willow Smith is a making a surprise appearance.

Paramore? Seriously? That's a terrible idea. They're excellent live, but it's 3 guys and 1 girl, how is that in keeping with the show's usual histrionics?

The Divas today should contain:

Beyonce, GaGa, Christina A., P!nk, and yes even Britney...

Agreed! This would be perfect. Although I don't know how it'd work out because Christina and Pink don't like each other LOL!

Seriously, those bitches are nothing compare to this:

and this

(and a big 'BTW' guys women are not the only ones who can be diva because Elton John is the biggest Diva of all. LOL)
