Using VirtualDub, I cut some scenes from a DivX video. Now I want to save it in Xvid format. When I do so, the file size of the output is bigger than the original, full video

I leave the audio bitrate and format untouched, for Xvid I choose a bitrate of 700. The original file's video format is DivX5 at 995 kbps, audio is MP3, 44100Hz, 48kb/s.

Why does it bloat my output file although it has a shorter running time and a smaller video bitrate?

Choose the appropriate compression, by default virtual dub uses the lowest compression mode (RGB), just choose DIVX or something else, try a couple. I think Microsoft MPEG-4 codes ver.2 is good as well.

The compression mode can be chosen from Video -> Compression...

I know all that. I choose Xvid (and I don't want anything else), which usually makes the smallest files, yet the output is bloated.

Re: VirtualDub bloats output file bigger than orig

which other settings concerning the compression did you use? which results do you get if you chose the same compression as before?

Framerate and color depth are left untouched, see pic for Xvid options.

The original format is DivX, but I don't have the codec installed, only Xvid.

Re: VirtualDub bloats output file bigger than orig

I converted the original, uncut file to an Xvid using SUPER, the new file is some megabytes smaller.

Yet when I take this new file, cut it in VirtualDub then save it, it's bloated again.

I cut about 50 minutes, yet the filesize is only about 50MB smaller than the original.

Re: VirtualDub bloats output file bigger than orig

I can't remember having "bloat" problems before with VirtualDub. A setting of "4" usually gives me rather small file sizes compared to the original, just not on this one.

Re: VirtualDub bloats output file bigger than orig

I checked the original file with some AVI repair programs. The video plays correctly, but I thought maybe there still might be something wrong.

Some of them (and the internal VirtualDub error checker) don't report any problems.

One called DivFix++ indeed finds an error, but instead of just deleting the few faulty frames, it cuts off the whole rest of the video

What other tools are there to fix the file correctly? :help:
