I just got tangled up in a website where I got a warning that my system was at risk for some viruses. You know the type.

This time, though, I got tangled up in a loop which always resulted in the attempted download of an ***** file. By the time I cancelled it and tried to close the window, I was back in the loop again. The only way I could get out of it was to hit CTRL/Alt/Del and shut it down that way.

I'm guessing I went through 3 loops before I got it shut down and, since I was being asked where to 'Save' the file, I'm guessing I didn't download anything.

So, for future reference, how does one go about getting out of that loop or is CTRL/Alt/Del the most expedient way?

I usually just unplug and take out the battery (if it is a laptop).

I had the same problem yesterday after clicking on a link in one of the posts here on JUB. ;) I went through the loop a couple of times but then my Norton 360 kicked in and stopped it.

^ I didn't link to the page from here. I clicked from Google and it was actually another forum that I went to. I was surprised that a forum would lock people in like that.

Same here, no matter how much you try to cancel it still keeps wanted you to download.

But then my Norton 360 went to work and Q'd it...

i got the same virus a week ago and my pc died 2 days later, it wont stay on.

When I have picked up a virus, I finally decide to restart my computer with an earlier date, before the virus attack.

First click on Start, then go to All Programs; click on PCHelp/Tools.

Next you should find System Restore, click on Restore, the select an earlier date, then click next.

If your computer is like mine, it will ask for a Restore Point, then next.

I takes probably five or ten minutes for the computer to go to the earlier, virus free date.

Then I turn off my computer and restart.

Hope this helps.

Note: you may lose anything you have saved during the day the virus attacked, but it may get rid of the virus.

First off......killing it using the 3 finger salute was THE WAY to stop it rather than clicking IN the windows and maybe launching some shit.......
As mentioned pulling the plug on your internet connection is good too to stop any possible transfers into AND from your computer.
I'm pretty sure you can't get any version of IE beyond 6 so the IE popblock blocker is out of the question.
I don't recall if you use Firefox or Opera but I would HIGHLY recommend them. If you are really used to IE the Opera interface is most like with what you might be used to and is totally customizable.

I use Firefox, but this wasn't a virus. It was one of those programs which tells you that you are at risk of viruses and then proceeds to get you to download some anti-virus program.

I guess I didn't quite explain it properly and the 'execution' file type became a bunch of asterisks.

I don't think I downloaded anything. I just got trapped in a 'warning/download' loop and only the '3-finger salute' would get me out of it. (That's much easier to type than 'CTRL/Alt/Del'!!! ..|)

Install the Noscript add-on. It's a bit complicated to get into though, it disallows any website to execute Javascript (what probably caused the automatic download) and you have to whitelist any website you trust, which can be a pain as most use Javascript nowadays.

Before you restore, make sure you backup your mydocument folder. Cuz it's gonna wipe out all files in it and leave it as a clean slate.

It's a malware. It will force you to download the so-called antivirus software and once it done scanning, you will be asked to pay to clean the make up viruses that this software found on your computer. You can either restore your computer like previous poster said or buy kespersky for $20 to get it clean.

With what you're running now, and getting stuck in one of the loops, it's best to just kill the process through the task manager.

You can get to it in a pinch with CTRL+Shift+Esc. Right click on the program and select "go to process." Then right click on it and click "End Process."

That's a virus, well a Trojan that thanks to good friends in the Ukraine or nearby regions is bad ass news and keeps making many come backs.
It is known by name names.

Spybot is one of the few that can catch this and disable it, many virus software programs cannot even though it is well reported on their sites.

Its slippery and will appear after a reboot.
If I had spybot (or other spyware program) installed I would boot in safe mode and run the programs.

Do a search for

Opachki.ru Trojan to learn about it and various alias names.

This is the name thats used often however it has had other names. Microsoft security essentials has a good report on this yet the MS program has never caught it on my pc.

I know it's a Trojan program which someone wanted me to download and install. I got a pop-up warning that my system "might be at risk" and, after clicking the 'OK' button, another window opened asking me where to save the EXE file. I would cancel that and one more message would pop up. I'd cancel that and the entire 'loop' would begin again before I could close the page I'd linked to from a Google search.

There was no other way I could get out of the loop other than to do the CTRL/ALT/DEL trick.

I already have Spyware and Malware protection installed on my system, and have for some time. I don't have the Trojan. It didn't download and I didn't install it.

My original question was to find out how to get out of the loop without doing the 'Three-finger Salute'. Short of pushing the Reset button on my system, it appears I did the right thing.

I've run across it a couple of times. Annoying little fucker, isn't it.

The only way I've found to get rid of it is to log off or Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

The good news is that most of us know not to 'run' the damn thing.

Clearly, that anti spy/malware protection isn't working. If it does, you wouldn't be getting those annoying pop-ups that asked you to download its software. You need to get yourself a new one - Get either AVG for free or buy Kespersky for $20. They both worked for me.
