My mom takes vitamins daily. She pops them like pills, every single kind available, vitamin c, b, and the rest of the alphabet.
When i go to the toilet after she pees, the toilet smells of vitamins. Its a strong pungent smell, and when i ask what colour her urine is, she tells me its yellow.
This leads me to conclude that half of your daily supplements are properly not even absorbed into your body. Most of it is drained out by your kidneys and goes out your body, which puts extra pressure on your kidneys to filter your blood, which could lead to kidney failure. im not a medical expert, but its a reasonable opinion.
Personally, i take vitamins when i need it. Vitamin c for colds etc, taking them because you want to replace them with food is not a good idea.

I've always been told by my GP that if you're eating properly and you don't have a medical problem that is depleting your body of a specific vitamin, there is no need to take vitamin supplements and indeed 95% of whatever you take is not even absorbed into your system but passed through the body in the urine.

I take one multi-vitamin pill a day. Always have. Does it do any good? I honestly don't know but I know I have fewer colds and haven't had the flu in many years and never get flu shots.

Generally, I think vitamins are overrated and too often a waste of money. There is no substitute for eating properly. The human body was designed to absorb food, not pills.

If the urine is yellow its due to dehydration.

Actually, high doses of vitamin C and some B vitamins also makes your urine yellow - my doctor warned me this would happen when he told me to take supplements.

It is also true that much of the supplemented material will either not be absorbed, or will be absorbed but not needed and thus excreted via urine - but the body will pick up what it needs. It's also worth remembering that the form of the supplement alters how readily it is absorbed - iron supplements are much better absorbed when taken with OJ than with water, for example.

Your urine is supposed to be yellow (especially first thing in the morning). If your urine is always clear that mean you are not purging the impurities from your system and you've got problems.

Vitamin pill contains additional ingredients that are not the actual payload. These may also affect the colour of your urine or its smell, how your body absorbs it, etc... in my experience, the time released vitamins have this effect of turning the urine phosphorescent and affecting its smell.

Anything that puts extra stress on any internal organ is going to cause premature failure. To what extent do the water soluble vitamins stress the kidneys, I don't know, and I am not sure if anyone knows.

I personally think its probably not the worst idea to take a multi-vitamin daily, particularly with a poor diet. However, beyond that, I don't see the logic. Of course, there are certain conditions where you actually would need it.

I absolutely agree, in fact, what you're saying isn't opinion at all, it's completely factual. However, I much say, to take vitamin C, for example, simply because you have a cold will do you no good. Let's remember now, Vitamins don't "cure," vitamins simply prevent. People that taken in vitamins by the mouthful don't know any better. Your sources should come from food.

I agree that food should be your first source, but if your diet is full of processed foods then perhaps vitamins will help. Who knows, but the way we are getting our food from distance shores and so much processing it a wonder that any of it has any good food value at all.

I read all those chemicals and I'm not hungery any more.

Opps, sorry for the double#-o

-Our Bodies Need Vitamins, Minerals & Phytonutrients to operate efficiently.
-This can be obtained from Fruits, Vegetables & Wholegrains.
-Unfortunately, how many of us actually take 5-9 servings of fruits & Veggies a day?
-Try asking a group of nutritionists "Do you eat 5 Servings of Fruits and Veggies Everyday?".Note on how many actually say yes.
-What's the OPTION to this PROBLEM?
-Multi Vitamins, Minerals & Phytonutrients Concentrates.
-However, Multivitamins SHOULD NEVER replace our daily intake of foods. It CAN help to fill in your Nutritional Gaps.

So, are vitamins good?
-Depends.

We can see a doctor if we have some pain in the heart. However, who's analysis is more accurate? A Cardiologist or a Doctor?

Same with Multivitamins. Would an amateur Company provide better understandings in Multivitamin developement or a Company that has been researching on how to improve their Multivitamins for over 70 years? And still looking for ways on how to improve them?

vitamins [from natural sources] are good to take to help support the immune system. drug store vitamins are usually junk, health food stores sell the better vitamins. eating natural foods [no white sugar or flour] is the 1st step to health and stay aways from processed foods and bad fats. most fresh foods grown today is not as good as years ago because the soil is depeted from minerals so a good vitamin helps supports the immune system.

^ Not true.

Ideally urine should be pale straw coloured, if it is yellow it means you are dehydrated. FACT.

Riboflavin (vit B2) is a SERIOUSLY intense yellow colour.

If you're taking more than your body needs the excess will pass out in the urine over the next four to six hours.

Large amounts of it WILL colour your urine bright yellow no matter how hydrated you are.

Take the word of someone whose job (for now) is urine chemistry.

i take one a day myself multi vitamin type. I rarely if ever get sick or anything else. Not sure if that is the reason or what. But its just for me everyone morning when i wake up to take one.

Travis,
I had the same experience too when first taking Miltivitamins(Not GNC though). I noticed that when I take the recommended dosage without food, those symptoms happened. Try taking it with your breakfast or lunch. Hope it'll help. Multivitamin is a concentrated form of food that has very high amount of Vitamins. Without food to go with them, its going to give you a Vitamin spike which won't give you a comfortable effect.

When you take alcohol on empty stomach, the concentration of alcohol in your blood will be much higher in a very short period of time compared to if you were to take alcohol with food.Something like that.;)
