The point she was making was that she was on to Newman’s bisexual life that entailed hot and heavy romances with James Dean, Sal Mineo, Howard Hughes, Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando, Tony Perkins, George Grizzard and the list goes on. To keep such innuendos out of her column (which would have iced his film career), she wanted him to give her exclusives on his impeding marriage to Joanne Woodward and other tidbits that would scoop her rival gossip columnist Louella Parsons.

It's a bit too easy and gratuitous to make allegations after their deaths.

It's called wishful thinking. Any hot actor, past or present, is always gay. And if he never showed hints of gayness, had a bunch of wives and children, it was all "to cover up his gayness." Oddly enough this formula never applies to chubby or ugly actors.

Wishful thinking is sometimes right and sometimes wrong, but in itself is not a determining factor on whether a supposition is correct or not. In this case, it would be correct, based on the sheer quantity of rumors and stories from people who have had first hand experience and contact with Paul.

Here's a quote from Marlon Brando regarding Paul Newman in Darwin Porter's book:

"He never fooled me. Paul Newman had just as many on-location affairs as the rest of us, and he was just as bisexual as I was. But, where I was always getting caught with my pants down, he managed to do it in the dark."

Paul Newman supposedly had plenty of affairs with other women as well.

If you're going to say a stupid thing like sex icons back in the days are 4'9" or 5 feet in height and this thread is about james dean and Paul newman of course someone is going to be curious to check what their actual heights were and call you out on it.
