There are OTC creams/ointments to reduce the appearance of scars. I think most of them use silicone in small amounts. They're usually right next to the band-aides and/or the the hydrocortisone cream. Also, they're quite expensive, about $20-40

I think some of those creams are also for hyper-pigmented scars. Just check the box. Do you know if the scar usually fades over time? Scars can take a while to fade.

Why not just leave the scar there and not worry about it? Scars show character, and it's just on your hand so it's not distracting to people, except yourself, of course.

cocoa butter maybe? or is that just for stretch marks, I heard somewhere used coffee grinds, but that coulda just been stretch marks also, there was a commercial I saw I forget what the product was called, Scar-Away or something like that, that you apply directly to the scar, its a topical ointment.......

According to google, some scars do fade on their own.

I would leave it alone, but if I could get rid of it, I would.

I would see my dermatologist again, but she charges $100 just for the doctor visit. #-o

Just see if it fades. If not, I'll still love you, Piglet!

The Dr's office would probably field your question over the phone without additional charge. I've also heard that vitamin E can be used to help scars heal faster and become less visible.(*8*)

Yes, vitamin E suplements. Just puncture the gel casing and use like lotion/ointment.

Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done for a scar once it has formed. There are some things that can be done during the healing process to reduce scarring but once the scar forms, it's pretty much there. In time, scars contract and lighten to a pale white color and are not as noticeable.

Since the scar is flat and not a keloid, you wouldn't be a candidate to have a scar revision done.

There's some evidence that cortisone cremes will soften the scar and make it shrink slightly. You can put a call in to your dermatologist and ask the nurse to have the doctor prescribe something for you (which will save you an office visit charge). They may even have free samples that you can pick up.

Probably the most important thing you can do is to put sunblock on it. Sunlight will worsen the scar and can cause it to become darker.

Thais have problems with scars because of their skin pigments. I remember that an ointment for haemorrhoids was always successfully used on severe abrasions caused by hitting the gravel after motorcycles accidents. The ointment eliminated most of the scarring. It was also used on other wounds. I cannot remember the name of the ointment but I seem to remember that it was made from animal (cow?) tissue.

I cannot remember the name of the ointment but I think it came from the US. Maybe someone knows what it is?

I hate it when people bitch about small things, i have a MAJOR scar on my chest because of an oil burn.

There is always someone who is "worse off" in one way or another. Although it may put things in perspective, it doesn't change anyone's right to be upset or concerned about what is affecting their person.

I knew a man who was doused in gasoline and lit on fire by a psychotic individual while riding a city bus. Even after all the skin grafts and surgeries, including almost his entire face, he still acknowledged that he was fortunate to have survived. I envy his courage, because he persevered through something that I know I couldn't have. Although I feel awful for what happened to him and am thankful it didn't happen to me, I would still appreciate being able to reduce the appearance of the "small" scars I have. That said, I'm sorry you were burned.

I'm just a little touchy about this topic.

Bio-oil? I thought thats a product everyone knows about.

Who are you talking to? Me or Restlessone

I have a friend who was in a car accident and her head went through the windshield. She had hundreds of stitches, and many scars after that. The doctor told her to use Eucerine cream. AMAZING RESULTS!!!! I cannot tell she has scars(what's left of them) unless I look really close!!!

BIO-OIL! I havn't tried it myself.. but I know many people who swear by it.. and its relatively cheap.

Antibiotic ointments like Neosporin help to reduce scar formation and speed healing.
