Ever feel like there's someone up there trying to stop you being what you want to be?

I've been trying to lose weight for ages. I weigh too much, definitely.

I try to diet, start feeling dizzy from not eating enough, break the diet. Stuff like that.

Now, this time I was determined. I still am. Basically, I exercise before and after every meal! Surely that'll work, it takes into account the amount I'm eating, builds up an appetite before, and burns some of it off afterwards. Surely gonna work!

Now, the first flaw is that I'm weak. I'd need steroids to beat a fish in an arm wrestling contest. This makes pushups, with my weight, impossible.

Second flaw is that my house is a bit weird. If I do any exercise which involves jumping, stepping, all of that, I make huge amounts of noise.

I tried Wii Sports. Great fun, quite active!

Ended up pulling something in my shoulder.

So I figured, okay, sit-ups. Can't go wrong with them! Twenty-five in each sitting, enough to get me a little tired but not so tired that it encourages me to sit around. Just a little ache. I started off doing, in the long run, about 75 a day. I've been moving up quite a lot, yesterday I did 175, for example.

Feeling very pleased with myself, even though I can't yet see the effects, and I don't think I've dropped a jean size yet.

Today my back's gone weird, and I KNOW it's got something to do with the situps.

So if I continue, I'll make it worse, surely?

Now what? I've ran out of ideas.

PS: This is crossposted from EC, incidentally. No point writing the same thing again.

I've got a 45-day plan that was created by a SEAL friend of my father's. It outlines an exercise regiment and stretching, as well as nutrition.

If you'd like me to send it to you, PM with your eMail.

Exercise is an excellent idea no matter what your life goal. It need not be overly strenuous, just regular and it should elevate your heart rate. It could be as simple as walking. The weight loss issue is simply; burn more calories than you consume. (I know, much easier said than done!) Good luck. Don't give up.

dsh122 brings up an important, albeit, simple solution: burn more than you take in.

I take in no more than 1500 calories a day. I walk/jog for about 1.5 hours and cycle for 2-3 hours every day. The pounds are just falling off!

Maybe you should join a gym. I joined a gym earlier on in the summer and I've lost a bit of weight. I now wear a Medium shirt as opposed to the XL's I used to wear. It's hard to tell how many inches of my waist I've lost as I wear pants of different sizes all the time. You need to start building muscle. Muscle burns calories. Oh, and about your diets, you shouldn't ever feel weak from starving yourself. Monitor your calorie intake, find out what's a healthy, but low calorie a day amount. I try not to consume more than 1,500 a day, but that's me. You need to find out what's right for you. Eat sensibly. No fast food, fried food, tv dinners. Eat real food, it's common sense really. If it comes in a box and is ready in 5 minutes in a microwave, then chances are, it's not healthy.

i agree with everyone's comments above for they are all very true. consume less and burn more. you'll feel better dude.
do not give up. best of luck to you.

You should be thrilled with yourself b/c getting started is the hardest part!

It sounds to me like you're doing great but that your're pushing yourself to hard to fast--especially if you're body is starting to hurt.

-it's normal that you can't do any pushups. You'll need to work up to those...start doing them on the wall (can't describe it...it's literally like laying against the wall and then pushing off), then when that becomes super easy try doing them girlie style (ummm, doggie position with legs kind of bent up). I'm sure you've already heard of these anyway.

-175 sit-ups at one time is a lot! I can't do that many and I'm in shape and exercise. My b/f can't do much more and he's in shape too.

-wii is a fun way to exercise! Have you tried the dance program one. I can't think of it's name but it's a mat that lays in the floor and you challenge either the game itself or a partner to a type of dance off. That thing is very, very fun!

-are you streatching? Also, try using a heating pad to get rid of aches.

-I'm going to get massacred for suggesting this, but have you considered going to a nutrition clinic to get diet pills? I know they work b/c people at school used to take them...they are also addictive (it's allegedly like speed, keeps you awake). All of my heavier classmates lost a ton of weight during our program...and I know they weren't hitting the gym. Don't order any pills from an overseas company though--it's illegal.

Disclaimer: You know, I read the lose weight threads all of the time b/c I hate being so skinny and it puts things in perspective. I only eat sweets and fast food but I just can't gain any weight. The grass is always greener I guess!!

The best exercise for losing weight and building strength is swimming. 175 situps are too much and might not be good for you. The more you do the less muscle you will actually get, cos it will just be like doing cardio for you and not resistance training. Do it slow and steady for 3 sets of 20 reps. I read from W magazine that cardio like running ages you cos you strain your body and lose muscle.

First of all DON'T be discouraged I am here to tell you it ain't easy, but you can't give up especially if getting into better health is what you desire. I have been there and it still is a struggle for me, but I have been very successful with changing my body and mind. The mind is the trick though, you have been given some great advice from others and those things will work for you too. Stay ENCOURAGED on thing I do is set a goal maybe a tiny one then reach it and just keep setting the goals higher as you become healthier and stronger.

Here is one thing that I kept in mind as I struggle to get healthier( both mind and body)..." It didn't take overnight to get out of shape so don't think you will get the perfect beach body tomorrow :-)) it will take time.

But you have started the process...GOOD LUCK! and remember you ain't alone.

I found a great product called THERMO. It is a NON EPHEDRA Thermogenic agent that provides unique ingredients to promote weight loss and fat burning safely. Thermo will give you energy and appetite suppressant activity. It really helps.

Was in your situation (thought not as severe) a few months back.

Have tried everything as well, including all you've mentioned.

Hire a trainer. I had never tried it due to the cost, but it was the one thing that worked.

Explain your situation, develop a plan with them.

Perhaps see a nutritionist as well.

Discipline and motivation, along with some cash, will get you what you want.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

One thing I have learnt is that you can do all the exercise in the world but you won't see the results unless you're eating right too. Cutting out alcohol when you're trying to lose weight is a big step (that's if you drink in the first place) as alcohol is basically full of calories you don't need. Sit ups aren't really going to make you any fitter or leaner because there's no cardiovascular work involved here, you're just developing your abdominals, you're not burning off a lot of calories when compared to say, a brisk walk or jogging. Try to spread your meals out over 6 seperate times of the day, making sure you get the right balance of protein and vegetables. I have found that what works for me is eating a bigger lunch than dinner (especially for energy throughout the day when i'm working and need it the most) and not eating a big dinner late at night helps a lot with slimming. Think about the amount of excercise you do compared to the amount of food you intake in the day. It's a lot harder than people think because we're all so busy trying to work hard at our jobs that an hour out jogging or cycling seems daunting when you're already tired from a days work. Good luck though because I know you'll get where you want to be in the end, even if that means you simply become more happier with who you are, regardless of your waist size.

lotsa good advice above - here's what worked for me

first thing i did was reduce the obnoxious/extra calories - the extra breads at lunch, the desserts after meals, afternoon bad snacks - cookie, brownie, chips, etc.

get rid of the "i wanna be fat" stuff

reduce portion size of meals - i love food - but i was eating too much - so just reduce dinner to 1 cutlet or portion not 2 or 1 1/2

i started to see results - and got motivated for more - that was key

i changed the way i ate - more chicken, fish and salads - bye bye to pastas, breaded food, fried food, etc.

started exercising more regularly - cardio mostly - elliptical machine

after some time i decided to workout real style - at a gym - that was about a year ago - what a diff - i continued to lose the weight and then redistributed what was left - good stuff

got into a routine - my gym membership gave me 3 free PT sessions - gold - do it

i'm about 25 lbs lighter - as light as i've ever been since i was 17 probably - and in better shape than ever

i did it - and trust me when i tell u - it's not that hard - u just gotta be motivated - and patient - and flexible

good luck

I was the same way in January, significantly overweight and sick of it! I'd tried a few diets before with zero results... so I said to myself 'no more bullshit, it's coming off!' I was so tired of it that I ended up eating between 400-1000 calories a day. Basically starvation I know, and it wasn't healthy, but god damn did I see results. On new year I weighed 265, now I weigh 195. I lost 70 lbs in six months without much effort, and my waist is down 12 inches! I'm balancing out now, yet I still want to lose 15-20 more lbs. (I'm 5'9") But Italian Sunday dinners get in my way! The biggest thing that makes the weight come off is NO SNACKING! Especially after dinner. Just make sure you eat just enough to keep you until the next meal, and don't cheat for anything.

hey man some of us arent made to be slim.. take me for example.. i walked several miles a day one year and dieted and didnt lose one damn pound

just have more sex and remeber

jacking off burns 200 colories an hour

I've never lost weight from restricting calories much. It just makes me sleepy or I lose muscle as much as fat. Do what you can to be physically active, even if it's just a bit at a time. :) I am 40 and still managed to lose 15-20 lbs this summer. I am now at my slimmest weight since I was 26.

I know this sounds really obvious but how I lost alot of my weight was a combination of cardio and dieting. I personally hate running so my form of cardio is DDR. It's a ton of fun. Lost about 30 lbs playing.

You have to actually exercise to lose weight. Sit-ups won't do a thing without cardio. You need to start off doing 30 min a day of cardio on a machine with resistance. Cut calories. Even if you don't weight train just do a couple reps of push ups so your arms won't get to thin. But weight lifting alone without cardio will get rid of fat the fastest. It doesn't have to be a huge project. If I put to much thought into it I won't do it. I have to get 10 lbs off but I'm sick of working out. I could get it off in a month if I put my mind to it but almost 10 years of working out has done me in. Also, your body is toxic right now and after a week of working out you won't feel so sick.

OK; My two cents : First; I don't say "losing" weight because If you lose something , you want to find it and/or get it back ... I prefer "Shed" pounds or weight etc ....
2nd: The Gay comic " Ant" swears by Nutri System when I ask him about how he managed to drop so many pounds and look so f'n HOT ......
3rd: I can't afford Nutri System and will probably go back to what I did before . I weighed in at 350 lbs ... started walking one half mile round trip for a week , then one full mile r/t for a week, then one mile r/t TWICE a day ... and got down to 190 pounds eating the SAME foods I had ... the only real change was the walking and I drank ten 8oz. glasses of ICE water each day .
I really need to get back into that program as I'm back to 230 and I don't like it ...
