Hi, i'm just wondering if anyone here can offer some advice.

I'm really, really self conscious about my weight and I want to get over it but I don't know how.

I'm not anorexic or bulimic so I don't have a health threatening problem, just more a psychological one.

Statistically like weight/height etc. i'm not overweight, but I seem to have a really big image problem because I always think i'm fat and desperately want to lose weight.

I know deep down it's ridiculous because i'm not really fat, but most of the time I feel it.

I'm having a really hard time putting how I feel into words, so i'll leave it at this.

If anyone has any advice on how to get over this it'd be great.

Talk to your doctor and get hooked up with a good counselor, preferably one with experience with eating disorders.

Eating disorders, like all other illnesses, have different degrees of severity. Your desperation to lose weight in spite of a normal or low BMI may be on the milder end of this spectrum.

You clearly want help--so please find a professional counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist in your area. Good luck.

Hotswimmer........that's the first thing I though too.......perfectly LOVELY body.......

Yep. Sign up for a course in landscape painting. Or join a book club.

Sounds like a pointless idea? I don't think so. I've seen people on this forum who have either struggled with their weight, or with their image of their weight, or with feeling psychologically healthy about their weight. Unfortunately what I have seen is this problem turns into their hobby. Either the problem itself, or fixing it.

The trouble is, worrying about your weight is a hobby that really doesn't give you anything. But like any hobby, it can take up a lot of your time and life. Strangely, worrying about getting well can also become a hobby, and I've seen some folks online seem to undermine their own efforts to get well. Worrying about it is the only hobby they have and the worrying becomes hard to give up.

So, that's why my advice is do something else entirely. You need balance in your life, and while obsessing about your weight robs you of that balance, so can obsessing about the quest to "get better."

You know how to eat a healthy diet. You know your weight is good. When you have negative thoughts about food or your weight, you have to shake them off and go to your art class. An hour of learning to paint will give you a break from thinking about it, it is something to look forward to after a reasonable meal, and every time you go, you'll know that you're doing something healthy for yourself.

Free yourself from negative thoughts by your actions. Take the time to grab a healthy meal on the way to class, and then enjoy the class.

Or you could just start lifting weight and trying to gain weight. That works for a lot of people. You have to get over your fear of gaining weight in order to gain muscle, and besides, you'll probably look better.

Thanks for responses people, i'm feeling a bit better about it now actually.

I've actually put on a little bit since I posted this and just feel generally relaxed about it now. I talked to some people about it and everyones been really helpful, you guys included.

And yeah it is me in my picture but this is a more recent picture, if i can figure out how to post it.

I just want to say honestly to you, your beautiful man. Maybe I should send you a picture of MY gut and then you might think twice about yourself. Here is something more like what I look like, it may help you feel better about yourself:

Thanks guys you've all been great. If I feel bad about myself I just think about all the lovely people in this forum and it helps a lot.

Well being completely honest you don't need to gain weight or lose any and you don't need to build muscle cause you already have some nice muscle build their, however they need to be toned. so just look up guides on toning not building muscle mass. and then id say you are good to go ;)
