We pay about $50 a month for our internet connection but I decided to do some poking around and found that connection "status" (this: http://i54.tinypic.com/10pahi1.png ) isn't as accurate as an online speed test.

So I did an online speed test and clicked a server that's about 10 miles away from me and this is what I got: http://i56.tinypic.com/2ciag5w.png

What the fuck?

I get a different result every time I do the speed test and the highest it's been was about 1.2mbps, which sounds correct because I was downloading a file and firefox said my connection was exactly that.

Is there any way to fix this? All our cords are plugged into the correct places and I get a good signal, there's no difference in performance when I'm using an ethernet connection either. (I'm currently using wireless).

Please help. :(

We only have 2 computers in the house and a few wi-fi devices but at most, only about 3 devices are connected at once. But mostly it's 2.

54Mbps is the max speed of the Wireless-G standard, which is what you are set up for. Windows is just telling you your network speed, not your actually download/upload speed. When you send a file from one computer over the network to another computer, you will get around 54Mbps.

The download and upload speed that you actually get is determined by your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

As far as fixing it, call your ISP and ask them what speed you're paying for and then compare that to your speed test. Unfortunately, you get what you get until you fork out more money.

Connect your modem as close to your phone line socket as you possibly can with the shortest cable and filter you can. If you're using an extension cable, the attenuation or loss of the signal from the wall socket to the end of the cable may contribute to the slowness.

1st off speedtest.net sucks for giving you a real speed... each ISP will have a site they can share i would contact your tech support from your ISP for the address that they use.. like for me i use Cox here in Las Vegas.. and i use test.lvcm.com

then i'd would also ask you are you using DSL (phone lines) or Cable.. and then ask just how old are are lines/cables (not the ones your computer use to connect to your router or modem but the ones in your house/apt walls and outside to the box and then to the street box)... then i'd ask how far down the line from the box (out on the street) are you (closer you are the less people in line to that box and only way to find this out is to ask the tech guy that comes to your house from your ISP that can look at the box and share that with you)

also running IPconfig or a traceroute (need to know IP of target which will then show you all the hops you ended up taking before you reach the IP of the contact (downloading site/server or gaming) you have to do.. each hop can slow you down.. also that traceroute will show you where any lagg or loss packets you are suffering from as well...

CHeers hope this help you some

First of all we need to know what speed you are actually paying for so we can determine if your line speed is adequate or if there is a problem.

54mbps is not your actual speed as stated.

This is completely false. Speedtest.net has a bunch of servers and they pick the closest one to your location. They are quite accurate.

I'm not gonna argue or debate one thoughts over another in regards to speedtest.net as this thread isn't about that

but yes knowing that i would have assumed you knew what your speed is if you are paying for it.. (i know mine is 25meg and i pay 70 a month but that is because i'm a PC Gamer geek)

When I can test my speed using SpeedTest.net on the server 5 miles from my house and get a result that is 50% slower than a server 40 miles from my house, I think its fair to say they're not exactly accurate. ..|
