Back when one had to know how to use a computer. I feel sorry for the windows/mac/facebook generation of non-thinkers.

(don't know what the image in your post was as it does not show up for me, but...)
I'm totally with you on that one!

How about this  not knowing the difference between Windows and Office ?

Booting A Honeywell Level 6 Communications Mini

Load 1/2' reel to reel
<Fwuuuup>
Stop
Clear
Load
Reset
Execute
(No screen; just a digit display)
Wait for the bootloader to load off the tape
The bootloader then executes the burnt O/S off the mainboard's eeprom.
The O/S accesses the mini's resources.
Wait 45 minutes while each of the 96 RS232 ports is linked into the O/S.
(if you don't wait; you get to start all over again!)
1 hr. into reboot you're back to a live system.

I do miss the old days, to a certain extent! :)

(Why is this info. still in my head!?!)

^ it stays stuck in your head because more useful information could go there instead. I, too, am frustrated by the stupid stuff I remember and yet seem to not recall stuff I need. But those procedures are a bit before my time.

That's like when AOL became really common.

n00b: "Do you have internet?"
me: "internet? You mean internet access?"
n00b: "yes"
me: "yes"
n00b: "okay, go to keyword..."

Greenhorns don't know about the Amiga/Atari wars back then and think they're special when arguing about Windows/MacOS today.

He asked how it would work without an operating system and you answered DOS?

LMAO, DOS is an operating system.

If you're going to post screen shots displaying stupidity, at least be sure it's only him and not you as well.
Have you ever though that perhaps it's not a screen capture of a conversation I had?

If you're going to be a twat, make sure brain is running before engaging fingers.

^ I did.

Should you find no point in this thread, kindly troll elsewhere. kthanxbai

I'm glad to know that OS's are now necessary. I can stop using tape and punch cards. But please, do go on; regale me with all your creamy os knowledge.

When I was a kid we had a Commodore 64. It ran on BASIC and took about 25 minutes to load Pac Man off a cassette tape. I got quite good at BASIC and used to write my own games. My ultimate triumph was a game that emulated Games: Summer Edition, a multi-level game that portrayed Olympic sports. Took me months, and took 45 minutes to load or save ... every single day!

^ and that was the way it was and we liked it

I was intimidated by computers and hated our 286 with a hercules mono orange graphics, and five and a quarter inch drives for floppies with 32kb disks. I still have some unopened packs of unused floppies somewhere.

Word of warning, do not attempt the following at home or at work.
Code:
c:\>del .

LOL I remember stuff like that, people thought AOL was 'the internet'

a few others I've heard more than once:
"I need Microsoft for my computer"
(usually they meant Office, but sometimes a Windows upgrade)
maybe the responce should have been: 'I doubt you could afford to buy Microsoft, its a big company'
or
"I need to get Adobe for my computer"
(commonly "Adobe" meant Photoshop or Creative Suite)
or
{computer is sitting there clearly displaying a windows screen}
"Does it come with windows?"

(by 'windows' they mean 'office')
The responce here should be: 'Um...Duuh: The screen clearly shows it has windows' LOL

Interistingly your original hotlinked image showed up normally tonight...then I re-loaded the page & it was gone .. weird LOL

Brings back memories of the old Apple II computer my dad bought (our first computer) If you didn't boot it with a DOS floppy, it would boot right into BASIC.

Obviously much more modern as its from the windows 3.1 days: but I had made a Visual-Basic program (& some custom "hardware") that I could use to control - standard 120v lights (used it for flashing xmas lights)

How about :
fdisk (& then delete the existing partitions on the 'c' drive)
or format c:

(I actually did both of these just a couple weeks ago LOL)

mem /d

(more useless crap floating 'bout)

I have, thankfully, forgotten the irqs and memory addresses of the com ports!

(gah! thinking about it has resurrected some of that info) ](*,)

The info always comes back when I'm installing old games in dosbox and configuring the sound.
Shuffling limited resources is a lost art.

Oy, tell me about it. I look at all these bloated applications and wonder "why?" Even some android apps are needlessly bloated for relatively limited functionality.

Here's an old mod demo from 1993 (almost 20 years ago... holy fuck I'm old). The executable and data file are under 2.5MB - (pkzip to 2 floppies ..|) With the exception of a couple images, everything is generated by code. It's fun to play it on early penitums and see everything running at 10x speed. The executable contains the tracker to play the mods and all samples. 9 minutes of assembly goodness.

I have a 486 saved for the purpose of playing Second Reality. It even has a genuine gravis ultrasound. Sadly, I couldn't afford one in the early 90's but finally bought one 10 years ago. The memory is upgradable by inserting the actual ram chips into the dip sockets.

So, um, yeah. This is what 2.5MB got us back in 'the day':

not get off my lawn
