OK guys, I am showing my age and lack of knowledge on the latest technology here, but here is the situation.

I am being approached more and more by guys who want to chat online. Some are on MSN and others use Yahoo. Still there is something call Skype.

Which software is the best to use or is one better than the other?

Will I be using too much space on my hard drive (500GB) if I just download them all?

May I have some guidance here?

I'm no expert, but I use Yahoo and it seems fine. I also have AOL Instant Messenger and Skype, although I haven't used Skype. I don't think any of the programs are that large. It didn't take me long to download any of those programs on my broadband. You can also use Yahoo web messenger if you don't want to download the software.

Miranda IM and Skype should cover most of the popular chat clients. :D Since Miranda covers YM, MSN, AIM, IRC, ICQ,... and Skype covers...Skype. XD The call are usually at high quality. :D

And no, you can download them all if you want, they won't take up much space. But they might take up some RAM if you have them all running. Signing on to every single one everyday might be a pain. Oh well.

this good for mobile phone (!)

BlueD, you are THE MAN!

THANKS a million!

I use Miranda IM. It's great if you don't use voice or video. Everything's modular so you only have the features you install yourself and you can make the interface into pretty much anything you want. Main downside is that for some reason, it won't block Yahoo contacts so I just have to set it to ignore incoming messages from Yahoo users I dislike.
