What the FUCK is going on...

Anyone have any info on the assault weapons ban that expired under Bush and if it was actually effective in reducing gun violence of this type. I was kind of young when it expired and very young when it was signed so I know very little about it.

And thus, the stupid American gunlaws and even stupider American psyche claims another several victims...

I'm sure there's a lot of truth hidden in this cynical remark, but I suspect it's more to do with the psyche than the gun laws. There's something about our rights-obsessed, individualistic society that just isn't working. I doubt any simplified explanation will ever be discovered, but I sure do wonder "Why is it always us?"

Now, I have a better chance of marrying Colin Farrel at a White House ceremony than the chances of the United States being invaded en masse--forcing me to fight from/for my home.

That was a very good one.

An this is a very good and telling question;

"Why is it always us?"

In reality, the problem cannot be solved as such. All that can be done is to significantly reduce the incident rate.

Hardly any0 in politics, having a sound mind of his own would bother to take on the gun lobby for the sake of a few people, who get killed every year in such shooting sprees. The politicians are politicians, coz they master two complex arts:

The art of getting elected and re-elected.

The art of choosing to solve the problems that can be solved.

Only once enough demage is done, as to start a national debate on the matter, and only once sufficient support is generated to put someone in an office with major benefits, will any0 seriously tackle the issue.

Just like a diplomat stops being a diplomat, once he says 'No', a politician stops being a politician, if he does not first ask: 'What is in it for me?'

You know the U.S. is going to Hell in a hand-basket if the Amish are getting slaughtered now.

You know the U.S. is going to Hell in a hand-basket if the Amish are getting slaughtered now.

Fuck.

I hate to agree with this....But, it's true.

One-roomed Amish school houses have no security.

(Read: An easy target)

For the life of me, I don't understand where all the anger is coming from...

I live in Sarasota, FL., and many tourists are surprised to learn that we
have a rather large Amish community here... Scattered between the beachfront and the million dollar condos and hotels are a group of Amish that have no contact with the outside world. No TV, no newspaper, no internet, no video games....*Nothing* that bombards the rest of us from day to day.

As a reporter on CNN commented, "I doubt that many of the victims even knew what a handgun was, let alone what it could do..."

Sad beyond all words.

is it common for schools in the USA to have security?

Sadly....these days.....YES, ctm....

Many 'major' high schools in The States have armed security guards posted
out front...

A lot of it is 'just for show', sort of like the 70-year old shopping mall guards
one might see.... (yes, we have shopping mall cops here as well) :(

It's basically a case of Americans freaking out in our post Columbine world....

At least the appearence of 'safety and order' is better than nothing at all...

Things are only going to get worse, I fear.

Out of the blue, a 32 year old man is suddenly so pissed off about "something" that happened 20 years ago - when he was 12 - that he picks a school at random and starts shooting kids...

This Demented Fuck-Brain was allowed to vote.
This Demented Fuck-Brain was allowed to buy guns.
This Demented Fuck-Brain was allowed to have children.

I don't know what scares me more...

It would happen anyway ....

Maybe, but far less often. Saving, at least one life, specially a child, would not be enough to change that damned amendment ????

In Germany recently, they voted a law against dangerous dogs, rotweilers and the like, because there had been a child bitten off by a dog. Now , not only the dog, but the master, have to pass an exam to see if they can be allowed together on the streets....

In the U.S. of A. you allowed very easily the Bush administration to cancel many of your freedoms and privacy, because of the threat of terrorism.

For the sake of argument let us say this threat is real, but all the deaths of 9/11 are far less than the number of deaths by firearm violence in one year ! And as it has been said in another thread on the same subject, you hold a world record in that.

Well the news just reported that the White House is going to hold a conference on the issue and are going to discuss and find solutions about it. So, we'll see what happens.

Can I stop holding my breath now? I must say that I was staggered (staggered!) by the

Ben constantly posts pictures that revel in cruelty and insensitivity to the weak, ugly, or victimized. That's violent.

Hey! I've never posted a picture of you. I don't even know what you look like (although I'm kinda thinking Ned Flanders). Please don't compare me to a child molesting, gun toting, kiddy murdering Yank - that's just uncalled for.

Roberts was armed with a pistol, a rifle, a shotgun, 600 rounds and a stun gun. Guess which one was illegal. The stun gun. I know which I'd rather be 'shot' with.

This is great news. I have to say that as much as Bush has screwed up over the years, he is capable of doing the right thing on some issues (and is it wrong that I kind of enjoy being able to turn on CNN and wait for Bush to say something stupid? ;) )

At the risk of wading into the gun control debate, I don't think it's a bad idea. It won't solve the problem, but it WILL limit gun possession to the people that pre-meditatively want to use them. Those people that might use a gun in a fit of passion won't have one available, and that will definitely save some lives.

This debate seems to have veered off track into name calling and personal slurs  so I'll leave the rest of my post to asking a single question. Hard-up1, what do you think should be done about the situation? I'm seeing a lot of root causes in your posts, but you haven't posted a willingness to actually DO anything.

where's RL when you need her?
I'm right here, but I have to admit that this one has me in a state of shock. As many of you know, I live in the Amish country, and this shooting happened not too far from me. Violence against Amish schoolchildren is absolutely unheard of, and the entire community is shocked and repulsed by this incident. We're also terrified. If it can happen to them, it can happen to any one of us. We're locking our doors at night before going to bed now, and that's a fucking goddamned shame!

I dare the NRA to make an Amish girl their poster child for next year. :grrr:

god im so over these shootings!!! we have kids killing kids in school, adults killing kids in schools.... yes someone please tell me what the hell this world is coming to?

god when I was in high school, everyone was too high to go shooting everybody, all we wanted to do was go eat lunch and have fun....yeah and maybe learn some stuff too..

but we definately didnt go around killing everybody!
