In a series of events I may be able to do one of my dreams, flying in a hot air balloon.

When I talked to the company a couple of years ago I was told even if everything went the way it is supposed to I may get hurt in the landing. I have bad knees and back and they said I may jolt and hurt myself.

I doubt any “damage” would be permanent, but I do have two slipped discs and maybe a third. My knees are not getting any better either. I am only getting worse.

What would you do? Any advice?

Why risk it, is it really worth the pain you'll be in if something goes wrong, can you afford any possible medical bills that may result from this foolhardiness ?

I more or less agree with Cormac. I wouldn't do it. If there are medical bills, could they be paid?

Any medical bills would be 100% covered because my back and knees already are. Medical is not an issue.

The pain though, the pain, you could fall though the basket or something.

I have flown in hot air balloons several times and never experienced a rough landing to the point where someone got hurt, or even came close to being hurt. A GOOD, pilot will know how and where to land, without causing injury to his passengers.

I have flown in a balloon, though I have not flown one. We went in the winter, which means the air was incredibly calm and still. This afforded us a beautiful, bumpless landing. In fact we landed twice. The first time was just a momentary touchdown on a frozen river. The proper landing was after we drifted another 5 kilometres across the city, over downtown and an airport, and several more neighbourhoods.

It is one of the most beautiful peaceful ways to move, and I enjoyed it very much. In your shoes, I would wait for a calm winter's day to go aloft, and probably between now and the flight I would spend as much time as I could get away with doing gentle stretches and strength-building, with a sports medicine guy if necessary, to be as fit as possible for the event.

Being old and having bad knees myself, it would worry me if they said that. I'm not sure I'd risk it. Even as awesome as it would be to fly in one.

But once when I was young I did get to go up in a hot air balloon (just a simple up & down .. don't remember what the event was but they were giving free 'rides' like that).

Old thread. I still hope to do this. Maybe next year. I do have a third messed up disc in my back. For now though I don't have the money.

There are freak accidents, but most hot-air balloon accidents are the results of inexperienced pilots trying to pay off the cost of the balloon.
