I rarely do arithmetic. Heavy hardcore math doesn't have numbers so I can't count them on my fingers even if I wanted to.
What I do though, for arithmetic stuff, is break stuff into 'chunks', and add those together.
Suppose you have 48 + 86.
In my head, I go (40+80)+(8+6) = 120 + 14 = 134.
I know it seems like it takes longer, but in my head it's actually a faster process than carrying anything. Bigger numbers work the same way.
149 + 132 + 264 = (100+100+200) + (40+30+60) + (9+2+4) = 400 + 130 + 15 = 545.
I can usually do that in my head, as long as I'm not adding more than three numbers. And if I'm double-checking my addition, I do EXACTLY what you described!! Though it's not an entirely accurate term, I call it "adding inside-out."
I don't churn my own butter either.
I feel sorry for your boyfriend.
Oh! You meant actual...butter. Sorry.![]()

I've never in my life counted anything on my fingers. I never saw the point in that. So I do everything in my head until I get confused, then I write it out. Or I get my calculator out... I have one in my phone for figuring tips.
