Since my roomate left a few months ago I've been forced to do the cleaning in our apartment, so I got a Swiffer. Lately I've been using it almost every day and it always comes out dirty! Is this normal? Is New York just a dirty city, or is it like that everywhere? Maybe I should just get a maid to do a big cleaning of the apartment before my roomate gets back, I'm sick of cleaning!

I found that an allergin hepa filter for the ac/heater unit takes a lot of the dust out of the air.

Dead skin, construction, particles given off by burning natural gas all add to the dustiness.

Airborne fibers from cloth articles (clothes, draperies, bedding, etc) contributes significantly to household dust too.

New your is a dusty city, after 5 years living there, I have come to loathe cleaning the house. o_O

There are pillow protectors you can buy at some stores to protect against dust mites in the pillow. Just buy a new pillow with a pillow protector (it's like a pillowcase that doesn't let dustmites through). They're made for people with allergies. They cost under $10.

Then wash the cases every now and then.

I have lived without a vacuum for several years and there is so much dust everywhere here. When I sweep, i get more shortly after. A lot of the dust is in the air or in fabrics, so it can take a while to get rid of it. If you're in a house, the heating ducts can totally fill up with dust, which is why duct-cleaner businesses exist. That can make more dirt fly in every time the heat comes on. Also, it's good to replace the dust filter in your furnace (or wash it if it's reusable).

But yeah, if your place has been dirty a long time, it's going to keep redepositing on your floor when you walk around and the air is moved. Just keep vacuuming and sweeping and soon enough you'll notice it becoming dirty slower.

I think these people look suspicious.
