Where the Sun King did not shine . . .

Sounds like a fun time.

No anesthesia. I don't believe that part. They had opiates and liquor. No way he withstood it with nothing.

I would tend to agree...definitely the opiates aspect of it.

They really are quite common and fascinating.

Yes, I've been a tad fixated on them because Grandmother suffered one from her last pregnancy, which was doubly doomed. The girl was born live but died just hours later when her heart valve would not close. Grandmother never saw her alive, as it was a Caesarian section, so she was out for hours afterwards.

I never discussed it with her, but knew of it from my mother's comments. Grandmother had problems controlling smell for the rest of her life. Her husband was a poor farmer and cabinet maker after, so I'm sure she never considered corrective surgery without insurance.

It took her over a year to pay for Granddad's funeral.

Fistulas caused by long labor in childbirth are the most common, and in the 3rd world, they still ruin lives.

It's truly fascinating to learn of Louis' travail considering he was at the very top of society and privilege.
