I now have a new iPod and am looking for someplace to dowload music, I am really interested in Classical Music and Oldies from the 50's and 60's. Every place I have found so far want me to give them my email address, mail address and phone number so they can try to sell me stuff.

I do not want that, I am seeking a site that will sell me the downloads and no advertising emails will be sent to me. Bunch of spammers.

Can anyone suggest a site?

Thanks Elwood, I will check into that. How are things in Motreal today?

Rainy and miserable. Had fun out on the town with Drops of Jupiter last night though.

Limewire is pretty goood and easy to use I do not know how much older stuff you will find?

Itunes doesn't send me anything in the mail or in my email. I'm pretty sure they have a policy against selling your information to advertisers, maybe I'm wrong? Anyways that's one option, but I will not use it anymore due to them not giving you a full quality copy. I believe Amazon has some CD's available for download now too. Again you still have to give your information to confirm billing but Amazon will not send you crap you don't want without your permission. I'm not sure of Amazon's quality since I haven't downloaded any of their avaiable releases. After finding out about Itunes not giving full quality copies I've just decided to go to the artists website and buy it from their suggested retailer. Alot of the artists will have ways to download the songs from their websites directly as well. I'm not sure if any of the oldie's artists you're looking for do this as you haven't named any, but I assume that their music company or their production company has some kind of website to get their stuff. I really don't like using these mega services like Amazon and Itunes unless I absolutely can't find it anywhere else. I hope you find what you're looking for!

Dynk the best place to download music is usenet. Does your ISP provide newsgroup service? If so there are mp3 newsgroups specifically dedicated to 50's, 60's, and classical music (as well as any other genre or era you can think of).

As for emails -- yahoo lets you have multiple email addresses. I have one I use only to sign up or register for things. Any time a site tells me to open a confirming email and click on a link to activate membership, that's the address I use.

Other than occasions like that, I never check my mail at that address and they can send me all the spam they want. My regular email address at my ISP is only for people I know personally.

Also, if you have an iPod, your files need to be in their format unless you're uploading from a CD. So MP3's don't help. Do I have that right?

No. an iPod will play mp3 files no problem. and iTunes for PC will convert WMA files to a format that an iPod can play.

Thank you guys, you have given me some good ideas. I will check into it all.

why should i recommend an illegal site ?which i think limewire is

why should people be able to get free music? musicians and others do that as their work-from the ups who delivers or post office to stores that stock it to musicians

you could try www.live365.com and record it on audacity -various stations

the moderator should rebuke those recomending illegal sites
It's been shown that those who illegally download music actually purchase more of it than those who don't download.

Ahhh here we go, compliments of the BBC.

Digital music research firm The Leading Question found that they spent four and a half times more on paid-for music downloads than average fans.

The study found that regular downloaders of unlicensed music spent an average of £5.52 a month on legal digital music.

This compares to just £1.27 spent by other music fans.

"The research clearly shows that music fans who break piracy laws are highly valuable customers," said Paul Brindley, director of The Leading Question.

I really like iTunes. I've been using it for over a year without problems. The sound quality of the downloaded tracks is outstanding and the iTunes software is very user friendly. The selection is really pretty good, especially considering that I don't care for most of what's become popular in the last 10 years or so.It's really convenient for picking up stuff here and there without having to buy a whole CD. I look at it as the modern equivalent of buying a 45.Considering that my tastes tend to run toward fairly obscure classic rock and dance music from my bar days, I've found a lot of good things. Now if iTunes would liscence "From a Dry Camel" by Dust and "Masterpiece" by Gazebo, I'd be in heaven.

Maybe I am dense, I have an iMac and I go on I tunes but can't seem to fine a place to search on it.

upper right corner of the iTunes browser. type in the artist/title/composer and hit enter. It'll bring up EVERYTHING in their database that's even close to your search criteria.

Can anyone suggest a site?

- iTunes (US) has expanded the classical catalogue in recent months. More albums have been added and some classical labels have "special" digital releases with extra tracks or additional material.

- Classical podcasts are available via iTunes for free (check the podcast directory). Podcasts include music samples, interviews and record reviews. Gramophone (UK) is one of the new additions to the list currently available (classical music).

- Internet radio is a great alternative if you are interested in live concerts and opera broadcasts. NPR and WNYC2 are some of the local alternatives but European stations have much more to offer in terms of live music. Major recent festivals from London Proms to Salzburg, Edinburgh or Bayreuth are now available online via European radio stations. Some links:

BBC Radio 3

BBC Proms

Austrian Radio 1 (Ö1):

Radio France:

Radio Clásica (Spain):

etc.

Opera Met broadcasts are also available online in MP3 format.

You can also go to the billboard charts/radio charts section. From there you can view the top 100 songs per year. If you click on an artist, they will also show you other artists that are similar.
