Which computer should I buy?

Ordering a MacBookPro myself, this coming week. 17" screen and as many bells and whistles as I think I would need or want.

I agree both are old technologies but you can't beat the price! I would stay away from emachines, very bad machines and worst CS!

What is your sister going to use the machines for? College Student? If so get the laptop...portability is most important in college!

If she is going light work, music listening, the weg, emails, etc., either machine should be okay.

Both machines are remarkable buys. Best Buy has to be losing money on these deals.

I am not one who believes that less-than-cutting-edge technology is not worth purchasing. Either of these computers can be workhorses that really make a difference in someone's life. Your sister is lucky to have you as a brother.

I think that overall the second computer (eMachines T3638 ) is a better buy, in the sense that you get a little bit more computing power for a little bit less money. The 17" monitor alone in the second deal is worth the cost of the entire package!

I agree with WYSIWYG. If your sister is a college student or lives in a small apartment, she might appreciate the portability and compactness of the Toshiba notebook over the slightly more capable but bulkier eMachines desktop.

I think it's a toss-up. Either way, you win.

One thing to be wary of, piggy. Best Buy sometimes offers loss-leader "deals" like this only with the caveat that you sign up for some service. Like two years of Vonage VOIP for your home at just $39.99 per month! (Offer includes substantial penalties for early withdrawl).

Vonage unveils the latest in a long string of distribution deals with big consumer electronics and computer retailers, this time with CompUSA. It's also selling its ATAs and service packages through Best Buy, Circuit City and RadioShack, Sam's Club and others, a total of 8,000 stores in all.

If they try to sucker you into something, take a hike. It's a whole lot cheaper just to pay a bit more for the hardware.

your laptop has a core duo processor, which is far better than either of the two best buy has for sale. as noelie said those are pretty outdated machines.

if you are just getting it for your sister, i think the desktop s probably a better computer in terms of specs and it comes with vista home premium instead of basic. you can at least hope to upgrade a desktop more so than a laptop. the limitation on only 2 GB of ram on both is rather low. even my old custom built 4 year old desktop can support up to 4 GB (windows XP wont support that much, but Vista will).

the monitor alone might be worth it though on the desktop. here is a similar emachine from tigerdirct (better processor, but less memory [although max memory is the same amount]) for $249 (but no monitor) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2726990&CatId=6

at any rate i would go with the desktop over the laptop.

Go with Apple! Go with a Mac!! And give your sister what you have now!!

If Windows sucked anymore, than it does already, Microsoft would have to change their name to Hoover!!! ](*,)

I am SO fed up with having to update/re-install my Anti-Virus, SpyWare, System Mechanic, and Heaven knows what else, everytime I just want to check my E-mail!!! Windows Maintenance takes more time than I'm actually able to "Surf", at home!!! :help:

I work with Macs! Trust Me!! They may cost a bit more ... but, Boy! ... they are certainly worth it!! ..|

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

You couldn't go wrong with the new iMac—hottest computer for the money on the market.

We have 2007, at least 19" is the standard nowadays.

Best Buy's cheapest 17 inch monitor goes for $189.99. All of their remaining four 17 inch models go for $199.99 - $0.99 more than the eMachines package deal described above!

You can't judge by a picture, of course. But the monitor in the picture looks like the eMachines model E17T4W, which is the one Best Buy sells separately for $189.99!

you could go for a dell desktop or alienware
Always nice to see Alienware get a mention here. That's some top-quality shiznit. ..|

lol he has another thread over in hot topics while he was camped out at best buy last night. 25 other folks were in front of him even then!

i'm dying to know piggy, did you get them? and did you go with the desktop?

OH i'm sorry you were that close and didn't get it. #-o

i give you two ..|..| and a (*8*) for the effort though!

the toshiba will be fine for your sister. that's a very nice present.

i'm not sure the vaio is a lot better (i.e., the processor is slower on the vaio) than the Dell you already have (although the screen on the vaio is bigger, but not as good resolution, the DVD drive is also much better, and the hard drive is much larger on the vaio). But i think you did good piggy! enjoy you sleep you deserve it.
