back when i had roommates, i would always setup these elaborate network structures so that we could all coexist happily without anyone having to lug around printers for sharing or complain about the others using torrents.

now that i live alone; i've discovered that i have an excessive amount of computers and they're all in general states of dysfunction. the problem is; i always form an emotional attachment to these machines, so it's difficult for me to decide which of these machines i'm going to get rid of.

that's where you guys step in:

candidate a:
1.6 ghz celeron m laptop from Toshiba. it's got 1 gig of ram and 80 gig harddrive and it runs ubuntu intrepid ibex and windows xp home. it's low powered, but it's small and light to carry around. the cd drive no longer works; but otherwise fully functional. i would give this away along with an external cd drive (the external drive is a dvd burner). i call this one prieta because she's little, dark and pretty. it's nice to have because it's easy to have at your side.

candidate b.
2.4 ghz dual core 2 laptop from mac with 2 gigs of ram. it's a second generation macbook pro that runs osx leopard and fedora linux 10. it's the size of a old cadillac and weighs twice that much. it's got a LOT of scratches, dings and dents and gets hotter than a dutch oven from a hell located on the sun because those idiots at mac gave it an aluminum exterior and no real fan exhaust. i call this one hortence, because her insides are better than her outsides. (i think hortence is and ugly name for a woman). this one can be a pain in the ass to keep sometimes.

candidate c
3.20 ghz pentium 4 hyperthread box style server (case built by lianli with independent 500 watt psu) with four gigs of ram and 1.5 terrabytes (raid 1). the motherboard is from intel and is the same as the macbook motherboard (i keep forgetting the name of the chipset). it runs centos 5.2 (and hackintosh osx 10.3, but that is no longer stable because i broke it) and has sixteen bays which can be used for either cd drive or harddrives. it also has a cd burner/dvd reader combo drive on it and has all sorts of tricked out leds all over it. i'll give it away with a 19-inch lcd and compact keyboard with built in mouse pad. i call this one tulip because a linux driver called tulip is heavily used. this one is BIG and noisy; but extremely useful.

candidate d
first generation imac running 233 mhz, g4 processor with 256 megs of ram running debian lenny. she's blue and has the original mac keyboard and mouse. she's in cherry condition. the gui is heavily modded to look identicle to mac osx tiger. i have the biggest emotional attachment with this one so it would be the hardest one for me to give away. i call her telula. i just love this one ;)

as you can see, i'm too attached to these machines, so i can't just pick two to get rid of.

make the decision for me. ;)

geez you are way worse than me during my "best times" :) gotta love some geek guys :)

i'd get rid of candidate d - except you saying that you are emotionally attached to it i see no reason to keep it. canidate b also seems not to server some real purpose and despite it's power it's more in the way than the rest.

a is a good netbook candidate, c is a nice homeserver.

You sure it's a G4 with only 233 Mhz? Or did you mod it from a G3?

My old G3 is a 350, and that was the middle speed when I bought it new. I thought the slowest G4 was 350. My old G4 is a dual 1 gigahertz processor. (I can't get rid of them, either.)

doh! #-o

it's a g3; not a g4

but i think i know what you mean; it reminds you of the good old days of computing.

candidate d???!!! dear god no!!!!!

what do you mean by netbook for candidate a?

candidate c used to be a home server. me and some of my roommates were gay, so we would share porn; the rest of my roommates were straight and only wanted to share my mp3 and movies collection; everyone wanted to share printers and the internet.

but now, it's just me and i'm only using one computer at a time; so it doesn't make much sense to keep this huge machine running all the time for just me. i can just migrate everything to a portable storage medium and save electricity costs.

that's kind of why i'm leaning towards keeping the macs because they both have firewire capability. but i can't bare to be without the trusty old ultra portable and my mega useful server.

argh!!! i can't makeup my mind. ;)

Wow! And, I thought I was attached to the laptop I used during law school. You've even named them all. :D

I'm not a techie, so I'd go for the two that could bring in the most money. Are any of them valuable? Could you sell it for parts or something? Could you donate it to a non-profit org. then use the donation as a tax write off?

Keep d since it seems to be the apple of your eye. ;)

You could always keep them all and start some sort of museum for lonely macs.

d. my god that one's ancient.

kick "her" to the curb ;)

Do you realize that telula is the closest thing to a girlfriend that I'm ever gonna have and that, just because you dishonored her, I'm going to have to kick your ass?

;)

That would be awful because I would probably get attached to every single one of them. :p

except for d, they are not that old to me. a is still an ok laptop even more so since you are running linux on it. i wouldn't get rid of any of them. i'm a sucker for old stuff and i'd keep it all even if i didn't use it. :)

Throw everything out except for 'C'

B and D are a pox on your soul. To properly cleanse yourself of their stains you will need the following: 4 lizard knuckles, 1 pint of goat urine,a puffer fish's torn and a shrunken head.... don't ask questions, just get them.

A you cna donate to somewhere.

Contrary to your previous post, I'd keep the server running. Buy a copy of Windows Home Server (if you don't already have it), and run it as a fileserver. Why? Backup. I learned the hard way a year ago that external hard drives (even when they don't travel) can and do fail. So I built a WHS box and it runs 24/7 and does duplication to its internal drives (a software "version" of RAID). It also can wake up your primary computer at night and back it up as well. As for justifying the electricity use, donate your extra clock cycles to climateprediction.net. That's what I do.

you are suggesting davy to run a SERVER with WINDOWS?

Run Linux or OS X for all I care. Just don't overlook the backup capability.

phew!!!! thank god, for a second there, i thought i was going to have to kick some ass. ;)

i was wondering about that backup thing; you caught that it's raid 1, right. that means to disks.

i like your idea about donating clock cycles though! ..|

ARGH!!!

i think hortence is pissed off at me for saying those bad things about her. she keeps static shocking me every time i touch her. ;)

davy darling I suspect you are not going to get rid of anything even when they are shit (biggest kiss possible)

*sigh*

you're right.

someone just donated a second generation imac to me.

the opposite of what i was hoping for has just happened. someone donated a second generation imac to me.

it's an imac g4 running at 700mhz running osx (10.4.11).

the os is reasonably up to date; but i'm sure it'll eventually get replaced with linux once it macosx is no longer viable on it.

it's got honest-to-god fireware jacks instead the adapters that telula uses.

i can almost feel telula's anxiety from the next room over.

i've been using telula as a gateway; but i'm thinking that this is going to be the next one.

so far; she doesn't have a name yet and i'm hoping that i'm not going to give her one..... 'cuz.. you know... i would end up getting attached again. ;)
