I certainly wasn't one of those people who knew.
I tested positive for COVID this past Friday morning, using a home testing kit. My symptoms as of very late Monday have lessened from 24 hours ago. My coughing and most of my sniffles have disappeared. 48 hours ago I had a "fever" (using quote-marks for a reason) of 98.3, when I usually hang out in the high 96's. I never felt woozy, fatigued or tired, any aches, any cognitive or taste issues...I don't even seem to have the "injured" throat which I usually get from a cold.
I was supposed to be starting to bury myself in my annual work cycle, which is mail-order, but I didn't want to tell the world about my new catalog and end up having the COVID turn into something that would cause me to be unable to do the work. I'm waiting ONE MORE DAY to be "safe".
I stopped typing for a bit just now, and I did 12 push-ups. That wasn't easy for me to do fifty years ago! I also did about 16 miles of walking since coming down with this. No lack of energy here.
Since I cannot yet do what I need to do to start the second half of my 2024 work cycle, I've decided to set myself up with a film festival! This is something that I have ALMOST NEVER DONE, because there's no such thing as "lying low at home" for four or five days. (I work all year, but about five of those months, which are about 55% done, are heavier than the rest of the year.) I have watched about one-half of the 2002 Twilight Zone series reboot (out of 43 episodes in all, half-hour shows); I had long forgotten that there are some BRILLIANT episodes from that series. So far: The Collection; Memphis; Dream Lover; The Pharaoh's Curse.
I did "lie low at home" for much longer than five days when the lockdowns hit in 2020, but in no possible way was any of that pleasant, and I was depressed just enough to never have it occur to me to sieze the opportunity and turn it into some cool fun.
I looked at what kinds of movies were showing. I noticed that CASABLANCA was being shown, after 2001: A Space Odyssey, and before The Wizard of Oz. Wow! A Casablanca sandwich!!! Two movies that have long been among my most-beloved, and in the middle was that wonderful movie that I've INTENDED to watch since, well at least adulthood in 1968. This was the most perfect opportunity ever, and I can entirely understand why Casablanca is sometimes considered to be the best movie ever filmed. I am so happy this trio of movies came at such a time that I was so open to completely relishing the viewings in an entirely-absorbed kind of way. The Wizard of Oz is MY all-time favorite, because it is so TIMELESS and I kept thinking "really...this was made in 1939?" That movie is brilliant in so many ways.
Monday I looked at the TV listings and saw that "Rocky" was playing. I remember seeing it when it came out in 1976 and I thought at the time it was "a pretty good movie about boxing". This time - WOAHH! - the character development, which I didn't quite get into in 1976 because I was such a late bloomer, now means to me that it is a movie about FAR more than just boxing. I so resonated with Sly, and I was surprised how I had entirely missed, before, that his Rocky character just may be the most genuine and heartfelt character I've ever seen in any movie. Rocky is TRULY a mensch. Not only did I watch Rocky, but this was a MARATHON and I watched the entire thing: Rocky, II, III, IV, V. I love his character! Rocky also has a very strong sense of fairness and justice, and he will call scumbags out - and, if needed, ruthlessly as the last option. I felt a number of "body rushes" and shed some tears (of the good kind! - and sadness when Apollo Creed was killed in the ring), as I was so immersed. I had never seen any of the sequels before. I'm thinking Rocky II may be even better than the first movie, which seldom happens with sequels. I feel blessed to have had all these wonderful movies show up, and I've never watched so many feature-length films in such a short time (35 or 37 hours or thereabouts).
I also spent a lot of time over the weekend hanging out on many cool and fun phone calls, and also spent a while on various types of logic puzzles.
This may be the most fun I've ever had being sick (and with an illness that can be life-threatening, no less)...
