Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg has announced she is retiring from acting to concentrate on her broadcasting career. The Oscar-winning star, 52, who replaced Rosie O'Donnell on long-running daytime show The View last month, insists there's "no room" for her in Hollywood anymore - because there are younger, more glamorous actresses taking all the jobs. Goldberg, who has made more than 40 films in her career, winning an Oscar for her role in Ghost, claims she has no choice but to retire from movies - because she never gets sent scripts anymore. She tells talk show host Larry King, "You know, there's no room for the very talented Whoopi. There's no room right now in the marketplace of cinema."

With a handful of notable exceptions, 52 is pushing it for the movies. The way Hollywood is these days, you are pretty much "done" by the time you hit 40....never mind 50. After 40, the scripts just don't come along as frequently anymore. Besides, after more than 40 films, it is doubtful that she needs the money or the stress of filmmaking. Broadcasting can keep her going for many more years to come.

how can she retire? The industry retired her a looong time ago I think

Like all actors, she would probably reconsider retirement if the right script came along.
I'm certain I read that "kids" are the main supporters of movie theatres. Naturally fluff pieces about other young people are the main draw. Many times the kids are there just to meet and see other kids and their attendance has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the movie.
Hopefully, the industry will realize that adults buy the DVDs and watch cable TV (including Pay per View); and start cranking out more pictures we enjoy.
Whoopi has never been the covergirl beauty type. It's surprising that there are no roles for older actors, who have genuine talent instead of just youthful good looks.

Boo, freaking, hoo! Wish she would make the retirement complete and disappear from VIEW, too!

Whoopi is reading over a script right now for a movie, which is set to film next summer. Do you have a source?

And according to IMDB.com, even thought ran by the fans, but still quite reliable, shes wrapping a movie right now. Just because she's doing the view doesn't mean she's not retiring from movies forever.

I had no idea she'd ever done any acting! I guess I'll have to retire from nuclear physiology now.:)

No More "Sister Act" Movies....DARN, Whatever Will I Do?

There was an acclaimed movie called "The Color Purple", perhaps you missed it.
Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source for facts, but her screen credits can't be faked withut challenge.

And there's also this little movie that earned her an Academy Award as Supporting Actress called "GHOST".
Not very seen, but very enjoyable film.

Whoever wrote that article needs to hone their literacy skills because nowhere in there does she say she's retiring. She's simply saying there isn't room for her in cinema--which is not her own choice.

Whoopi was a GEM in Ghost. I still love her humour in that movie. Think no one else could pull that off the way Whoopi did it.

After her comment like that, I bet some are sending her scripts.

She was pretty awesome in Ghost & I love her in Sister Act too

I also saw her in an episode of "Everybody Hates Chris" in a scene with Tichina Arnold (sp) that was pretty hilarious as well

And of course "The Color Purple" is a classic that wouldn't have the without her

And I agree that she doesn't really "need" to act anymore, I know she's involved with radio & does a ton of stuff for Lifetime TV too & of course The View.

Most actors would kill for the type of acknowledgment, success, & reputation that Whoopi received from roles like those in GHOST & The Color Purple during their career

Paxton is correct... "Ghost" was her best performance, IMHO.

Whoopi is the first black actress to win an Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.

Go 'head girl!

I have always loved Whoopi shes so funny and a very good person all around and am sure she will do another movie in her life but maybe not for along time I enjoy watching her on the view and I wish her the best

but if can't she get scripts
is it really retirement

or no one wants her

but i do think she rocks

Maybe if she grew her eyebrows back???
