Who's the Geekiest of them All?

I know what you mean about WordPad/Write. All I need is a bit of being able to have different fonts and make some text in colors.
It's simpler than using Dreamweaver and then doing a screen print.

I miss WordPerfect.

I miss WordPerfect.
WordPerfect is still around.

No idea how good it is now, but I remember in the past more than one person who swore by it.

I've utilized WordPerfect since I learned it on an office computer back in the mid 80's. I am currently utilizing WordPerfect x8, which originally came out in 2016. So, yeah, I should update it. The only problem that I have with it is that I have to convert any *.WPD files to Word *.DOC files if I'm going to e-mail to someone. Most people don't have WordPerfect on their computers; but, it seems as if every computer does have Word  Or, I convert the *.WPD file to PDF format, which sometimes is easier.

2016? That's virtually brand new compared to WordPerfect for DOS,which some people still use and swear by! See this page:
"Your mileage varies" and all that, but I think word processors have long since reached a point of having everything many people will ever need.

As I recall, there was a story years back about some government agency that decided to use OpenOffice.org (which evolved later to LibreOffice, although it also remains its own project--although LibreOffice was, the last I heard, better). MS PR had some line about: "Well, that's only the equivalent of MS Office 97!" To which the agency said: "That's all we need!"

I, myself, could get by with late 1980s word processor technology, except for supporting Word documents and PDF creation.

PDF format, which sometimes is easier.
I use PDFs a lot. One thing that is nice is that it's a universal format that should accurately render anywhere. No question if a given word processor is installed or not. No worries about if the dcoument will get messed up because it only renders slightly differently in a different version of word processor than what one used to create the document. (Someone, years back, who worked in a law firm told me she had documentsthat would get screwed up when Word got a security patch.)

Another plus with Linux. The mascot is so cute!

I also liked an older version of Konqi, the KDE dragon.

Of course, I could also buy a newer used laptop, but not enthused about that. Mine performs fine so far. New laptops are overpriced and the industry is similar the mobile phone guys, constantly driving up price when the true picture of the cost of manufacturing is going down per unit, so a sham schema targeting the wealth of the Western consumers.
I've heard some rumbles that CPU technology will be changing quite a bit this year. From what I hear, there are a couple of forces at work. First, to compete better with Apple Silicon with things like low energy use. (A factor for laptops.) Secondly, support Windows Copilot. So this may not be the best time to buy anything.

Sigh... I'm overdue for a tech refresh, and now I find myself wondering if I can get another year out of my current computer...

WOW.

What the fuck did Google Chrome, Dropbox, and Yahoo conspire to do that had my computer choking after someone's update?

Finally I am able to move with some speed and force, but by this afternoon, I was thinking that my computer had been turned over to processing blockchain for some crypto-scam currency.

A restore to 48 hours prior seems to have made it functional again...and I have my camera back for auto recognition and meetings...but Chrome will not open now at all.
