Bert Large in Doc Martin was played by Ian McNeice. He also recently played Louis XVIII in Ridley Scott's Napoleon. I wasn't a fan of the film, but I enjoyed McNeice's performance as Louis, particularly because the idea of "Bert" as the French king was so much fun. I can't help but imagine that this was somewhat of an inside joke on the part of Scott.
