In a competitive weekend at the box office with several higher-profile films opening, "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?" outsold them all with a surprisingly strong $21.5 million in revenue, distributor Lionsgate Films said today.

The Atlanta-based filmmaker's fourth feature knocked Walt Disney Co.'s family comedy "The Game Plan," starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, to No. 2, with $11.5 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters. Based on Perry's hit play, the PG-13 comedy drama about relationships and fidelity features a cast including Janet Jackson and the filmmaker himself.

But its very good to see African Americans doing well in film.. since it is still a white dominated industry.. its good to see that. Especially when the cast if fully black.

Tyler Perry is a strange guy. I haven't seen any of his films (not due to his race - I see roughly one movie a year, if that), but critics seem very confused by his approach. I don't know about this current film, but many of his previous ones have featured rather broad stereotypes and rather broad lowbrow humor - Tyler dressed as an old woman destroying a room with a chainsaw...but then there's a quickie sermon and a hug at the end. And many of his fans praise these films as "good Christian family entertainment". Hey, if they like it, fine, but it seems a bit odd to me.

I do hope the movies are doing well because they're actually good, not just because Black audiences are starved for something - ANYTHING - that speaks to their lives. That sort of thinking is what gave the planet "Brothers From Outer Space".

You mean to say it's a movies content and themes that matter as far as whether it's advancing civil rights and not just the color of it's cast? Madness!! That would mean To Kill A Mockingbird was more important from a civil rights perspective than Bad Boys 2 or Man on Fire! How could that be?

I think thats exactly why Tyler Perry's movies are so popular. Its sad these preachy, Christian propaganda filled, stereotypical movies do so well.

African Americans Have Been Doing Well in Film For Several Years Now, Nothing new, you have all these poor acted Urban Dance Movies, Rapper Biographies translated into film, is this all you can talk about, every thread you create has racial connotations, Its Quite Frankly Annoying!

Did someone in the movie say that insufferable "How YOU doing?", for those that saw it?

Wrong movie. That would be Norbit. Besides, Why did I get married doesn't feature Madea and her family. Her greeting is Helluuur.

I love his movies...well...I've really only seen Madea's Famiy Reunion and Diary of a Mad Black Woman, but the overall movie did remind me of my own large family. Yes, sometimes the stereotypes are over the top, but from my own experience, the eldest lady is the matriarch of the family. There is no shit to be taken, unless you want to be popped upside your head (or in my case, getting a switch). And church is a big thing in a black family normally. I may not agree with what the church preaches, but I don't let something like that cause me to throw the movie into the trash. His movies never really put down anyone. Most of the time when the church is involved in the two movies, it was to bring people together and be happy.

I'm glad this movie is doing well. His last one, if I recall, didn't do as hot. Probably because people only expect to see Madea in his movies, when he isn't just about Madea.

Okay, well from my experience it was a big thing. For the few years I went to church it was always a "black church." The friends of mine that are black insist I go to church with their families.

I was being too presumptuous to say that it is normally a big thing, since I haven't done extensive research.
