I went to the doctor about three weeks ago because I have a lump on my left testical and it hurts quite a bit. He thought I had an infection and gave me antibiotics, but it turns out, I don't. I had an ultrasound yesterday - they say nothing is wrong. I've also had a blood test and a urine test, they could find nothing.

So why does it still hurt!? Any ideas? The doctor is totally clueless. I have to make an appointment with a urologist now, but what further tests can they do? Seems like they've already done everything....

What ever it is get that second opinion and then dump the first doctor....
It could be or lead to testicular cancer...better to be careful and informed...

Good luck!

Several questions:
1. Are you sexually active? If so do you practice safer sex?
2. Do you masturbate? Have you noticed anything unusual about your semen? Is the blood in you semen.
Usually, if the painful "lump" is located on the top of the testicle, it indicates an infection or possibly congestion in the epididymis which is called epididymitis. It could also be a condition called epidymo-orchitis. If it is in fact epididymitis, urinalysis is often nromal and cultures are negative. If it is a low grade infection the WBC may not be grossly elevated. The normal course of treatment is antibiotics. If the condition does not respond to antibiotics and it is diagnosed as epidymo-orchitis, a nerve block of the spermatic cord using local anesthesia can help alleviate the pain. In any case your best bet is to see a Urologist ASAP to rule out any possibility of cancer.

Also, do you play any contact sports? It is possible that you may have suffered testicular torsion which if not treated immediately can lead to testicular atrophy. Does your testicle feel hard or is it pliable? If it's hard, you need to see a Urologist like yesterday.

Hope this info helps. I am NOT a doctor, but I worked for a large county health department as a Sexually Transmitted Disease specialist and so I've got many years of experience in this area.

That's what the ultrasound was for...no cancer.

Yes.

Doesn't everybody? :D No, nothing unusual about semen.

Yeah, that's what the doctor thought it was at first, but the antibiotics haven't helped. He was very specific today about saying it's NOT an infection...but he has no idea what it is.

Does anybody know what further testing the urologist will do?

Not sure exaclty what your doctor told you but an ultrasound can not definitively rule out testicular cancer in all cases, if epidydimo-orchitis, torsion and spermato/hydrocoele have been ruled out then there are a number of blood tests the urologist may do to look at some more indicators of what may be going on. Abodo and pelvis CT scans may be of use as well. Ultimately you may need to have a a small excisional biopsy done of the lump to definitively determine its nature.

Orchitis or epididimytis would be a particularly common cause of the presenting symptoms so I think its pretty unreasonable to suggest a doctor is negligent for treating a common cause empirically whilst also doing blood tests and imaging studies to rule out or check for more sinister causes. He has reached the limit of his expertise with normal results for those studies and has rapidly referred to a urological specialist, all in all I think this sounds like thorough responsible diagnostics and treatment. Attitudes like that lead to good doctors leaving or being forced out of practice and in the end hurt no one but patients.

Agree with above. And I agree with oz_doc in thinking you have a pretty darn good doctor. No doctor can know everything about everything, there's too much. He did the main studies he should know about and then the referral to a specialist. Can't ask for more than that.

This has happened to me before, I'm sure it's nothin much too lose sleep over, but most certainly see many a doctors of all kinds. But my nuts tend to get extremely sensative...but it's what I'm definitely willing to deal with in comparison to a 'vagina'!!, lemme tell ya there is a shit load of maintainence that goes on there...](*,)

i had them on both my testicles they were cysts but they have both gone now and all is fine

My nuts sometimes hurt its like a feeling of being kicked its to do with the heat i think somtimes after a jackoff session if i havent in a while. i check myself regually and am very paranoid about what i think I feel and there's nothing there. (that shouldnt be there lol)

"I don't remember all the technical terms, but sometimes the epididymis can become swollen from a change in sexual activity/frequency, or just randomly. Some men are more prone to it happening. It may occur for a few weeks or so, and then not again for an indefinite period of time. If it feels worse for about an hour after ejaculating, but then better for 12-24 hours, that may very well be what it is. Sorry I can't remember more about it. I reckon a urologist would be familiar with whatever it's called. Good luck." Quote from RestlessOne
