Why so many versions of one album?

i think artists should just have one version of their album, even if the market is different around the world.

also, why do artists have to re-release their albums? it can help sales (i.e. The Emancipation of Mimi), but in most cases, it doesn't.

why do artists leave out decent songs from their albums when they still have space left? it's not like the record companies won't approve the songs. instead of an album 50 minutes long with 12 songs, artists can have a full album 80 minutes long with 20 songs (i know that's a long duration for an album and a lot of songs, but might as well fill it up unless the artists don't have enough quality songs).

you guys are forgetting how greedy record executives are. instead of recording 18 songs and making one album, they can double their profits by splitting it into two 9-song albums, fans will buy em either way

that would make sense if they actually did release two separate albums, but they don't. in reality, if this happened, the "first" album would sell, but the "second" album would never even be released because that material would be old by the time the first album's course ended.

think about it:

mariah releases e=mc^2 in 2008 and its course ends at the end of 2009.

mariah has a set of tracks that wasn't included on e=mc^2 that could be made into an album and released in 2010. this material would be 2-3 years old by then, so mariah and the record company wouldn't want to release it...there goes a bunch of tracks that could have made it onto e=mc^2 :(

Luckily, I didn't buy Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad last year because she's re-releasing it next month and I'm going to buy it then.

i never buy an album when it first comes out

A) it's cheaper to wait

B) it's becoming more and more likely that 2 months later the same album will be released, same price, with all kinds of additional goodies that the first round won't have, behind-the-scenes, music videos, sneak peeks, unreleased songs, bonus tracks, all for the same price as that first cd

Exactly!

I bought Mariah's new one today because I really wanted to own it, but I'm sure she's going to re-release it later this year (probably around Xmas) with extra stuff and remixes that were way better than the originals.

Last time I ended up buying Emancipation TWICE! The original then the re-release which had a crap load of newer songs. Oh well...

Think of the Japanese.
The Dutchess by Fergie has been re-released three times there and is about tobe re-released for a fourth time. Each time with new things though of course.
