It seems like this is M. Night Shyamalan's last chance for redemption after his flop with The Village and the pretentious, inane self-suck that was Lady In The Water. I've always defended him because I honestly think he's a brilliant director. As a screenwriter, though...not so much. I think he had a good trilogy with The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs and that made him a little cocky and it very much showed in his screenwriting.

The Happening actually looks good, though. It's his first R-rated movie and the trailers look scary. I'm willing to give him another chance and see it and I really want it to be good because I think he deserves more credit as a director than he gets when people base their judgements of him on his screenwriting.

I actually liked Lady in the Water. It was just a nice fantasy movie.

The Happening looks quite good. I think the twist is biology related. Something about bee extermination or something. I mean, he's got unexplained phenomena and one of the main characters is a biology teacher. Two and two.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those rare directors who can actually builds atmospheres. His films are full of emotional textures which is extremely uncommon in american cinema nowdays.

Sure, he was behind not so good movies like "Lady in the water", but let's not forget he also made remarkable pieces like "The sixth sense", my favorite "Unbreakable", "The village" and the one with the unsatisfying ending "Signs".

I'm not sure about "The happening" breaking box office records, but I firmly believe that this time Shyamalan went for a harder edge in terms of story. I guess when you deal with the end of the world, no happy ending should be involved.

I completely agree. Even his bad movies have been exceptionally-made. As horrible as Lady In The Water was, I still thought it was visually stunning and as you said, had great atmosphere.

Regaring the ending of Signs...it was a little hokey. But before that point, I thought the movie was fantastic. It remains to this day the scariest movie I've ever seen.

Well, he's supposed to be working with the show's two primary creators so...

Wow, so why is everyone taking a dump on Lady in the Water? Wasn't it not supposed to be a horror film?

Luminum: I went into it expecting some fantasy thing. I was hoping maybe Shamalamadingdong could do that better than his other failures (hello the Village). And then I was just confused at the storyline and annoyed at Paul Giamatti, as I always am when he's in anything. Maybe that's just me though.

Anyway. I do plan to see The Happening. I plan to see it sometime when there won't be very many people there. I plan to see it with my best friend, who will be home from Chicago at last. And we plan to mock it relentlessly. Because we no longer believe in Shamu as a director and certainly don't feel him as a screenwriter.

Mark Wahlberg. You bet your next week's ass money I will see it. I love me some Marky.

Hmm...yeah. The plot was a little confusing. I didn't mind Giamati so much. I was just annoyed with M. Night's cameo as this guy who will write an amazing, world-changing novel...yeah...sure.

Anyway, I wonder how he'll pop up in the Happening.

Im def. going to see it. i love all his movies except Lady in the water.

And for the record, i thought The Village was brilliant.

I didn't think The Village was as bad as everyone made it out to be. It wasn't at all what it was marketed to be, but I found myself enjoying it. Unfortunately, I had read a spoiler months earlier, so I was already anticipating the ending.

Meh.
I just thought Shimmy'n'shake was very into how very clever he thought he was in The Village. "OMG GUYS SHES BLIND SO SHES THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SEE PROPERLY!!!!1!" Really, Shake'n'bake? Really? And the woods imagery? Really?

I was also a bit biased due to something that wasn't Shakenbaby's fault: a few copies of The Village released to theatres weren't edited properly, so there were still multiple shots that the boom mike hadn't been cropped out of. I witnessed one of these screenings. It was HILARIOUS.

(And if the mocking of Shyamalan's name is annoying, i'm sorry, it's really all for my own benefit)

I'll read the critics reviews FIRST.

The commercials look good, but I'm not rushing to go see it.

I'm surprised at the hate for Lady in the Water. I actually liked it. I watch it whenever it comes on cable.

I liked "the village" for the most part, and I never saw lady in the water. I'm sure that I will see it, but i doubt in theaters.

I think I might pass on this movie I always got the feeling Marky Mark was a big homophobe.
