I just bought a brand new Impala (2007!) and want to get the windows tinted. Problem is, I'm in Minnesota so the limit is 50%. What I'm wondering is, is it worth it? The guy I talked to said he could do the back windows a shade darker and the two front ones 50%. Problem is, that's not legal.

I don't know what to do:confused:

I am also having the clear bra installed. Looks like a good investment. I hate rock chips!!!!

Thanks for your input~

The legal limit here in Georgia is 35%. I think anything lighter is not worth the money. I had my truck tinted at 20%, even though it's illegal. I don't know how much they enforce the law where you are, but if they do with any diligence, then don't take the chance. Btw, good decision on the bra.

I find that tints only attract attention from the police. Personally I don't like the way the tints impair my vision in twilight hours.

But to each his own.

There's a chance the police will fine you, doubt it's likely though.

A buddy of mine was slapped with two tickets for tinting his windshield. He's not very...smart.

Tinting the windshield? That's just dumb!

EDIT

In my area, not only will you get a ticket, but most times the police will key the tint. Especially the county sheriffs!

Yeah, in most areas you can get away with tints. You're best off not tinting the windshield (if you do, go very light). I would find a car forum w/ members from your area, and try and guage how anal the cops are in your area. The bottom line is that tinting legality is [in most places] a sham, and you'd be surprised how many "illegal" things many cars on the road have...

Forget the tint. How are cool guys gonna see the stud driving the Impala if you are sitting behind blacked out windows?

window tint makes any and every car look so much better :X

here in tennessee the legal limit is 35% but just about everyone my age has 5% lol... i stuck with 20% on mine. Cops don't really care about it here... they've got better things to do

Stick with the legal limits. Tinting windscreens is an absolute no-no in Oz, and I suggest that is for very good reasons. No reputable window tinting firm would touch a windscreen and they are bound by law to apply up to legally permissable tints only.

What he probably meant by tinting the windshield is the "brow" across the top... it's like the icing on the cake.

When we got our minivan, the side and rear windows were all tinted. I never really cared for tinting, but in 2 instances it's come in very handy. First, when some moron is driving behind you with his hi-beams on(at night), it keeps me from blinded every time I look in the rear view mirror. Second, we went to the drive-in and between the window tint and the bench seat in back, we had a great time...and even saw some of the movies....

In the Southwest and especially Nevada, having the tint on all the windows certainly HELPS keep some of that HOT sun out of the car and helps the A/C make the car cooler! Really! It does help!

Look at the chart below and check your state out for their legal limits on the front and back windows. Note that in the Southwestern states, you can put "ANY" kind of shade on the back windows; only the front windows have limits so that troopers/cops can see what's going on in your vehicle when they approach your car. The few times I have ever been stopped, at night, I always turn on the dome light in my car so that the officer can see me and see that I am NOT up to NO good and not get him/her upset so that they might use force against me or anything!!!

I know the weather people on TV have done some tests with thermometers in cars with and without tinting and those with tinting have significantly lower temps than those without!!

Just Do IT! (*8*) (*8*)

my truck has the tinted windows and i am forever forgetting my sun glasses.

my car doesn't and i have my carreras on the seat next to me so i don't get caught in that blinding california sunshine ever

in brief...silly rabbit, tints are for kids (and get the cops attention too)

There is also the issue of the quality of work as well as the resellability of the vehicle afterwards. I have a much older car and the previous owner had the windows tinted after market. Now I am in the unenviable situation of having to try to clear all of the tint and adhesive off the windows since it has turned a milky shade and I can no longer see clearly out the rear or side windows. Quite unsafe and very irritating.

I used to live in Minnesota. I had my windows tinted to 50%. It wasn't very dark. I got a ticket because there is a slight tint from the factory and with the 50% tint, it was actually like 45%. Minnesota State Troopers LOVE to give tickets for tint. Be careful.

In South Dakota, they don't care about tint. I have my car now really dark tinted. I love not being able to be seen.

I just bought my mom a used car from another state. When I went to get it inspected, it failed because of the tint. I had to have it all removed, which was a bummer.

I suggest leaving it alone. If you move someday, it might not be legal in that state.

I don't know anything about tint--- but as an aside, I have a 2002 Impala that I really enjoy and that has given good service. I hope you enjoy yours!

I have illegal tint on my benz, and I've never had a problem, I've owned the car for about 3-4 years now with the same style tint, and been stopped by at least 4 different police officers in it.
