Windows 7 updates - Code 646 error

For months now, ever since I got this laptop, my Windows has been trying to install updates every time I shut down the computer. And, for months now, I have tried unsuccessfully to do it manually. There are three Word 7 updates which keep getting an 'Code 646' message. I've tried installing each one individually. I've gone through the troubleshooter, I've gone through Window's automatic 'fix' which, apparently, fixed the problem. The only thing left to me is to change the registry manually, and I don't feel comfortable enough with computers to do that.

Is there an easy 'fix' to this? If not, how can I tell my computer to ignore these updates and to stop trying to install them? It's not only time consuming, but it eats up valuable bandwidth.

I've had that error code when I've gotten updates for microsoft works, which I don't have on my system. It tries down loading updates until they install properly. Since I don't have it, it will never install properly. I just go into the update log and turn off, or hide, that update. It stops trying to download it. I'll look up where to do it if you need more info.

To add to my above post, you can hide the update by right clicking on the item in the update list. A pop up gives you a hide option. It's not a permanent thing, you can unhide it if you find you need it in the future.

^ Thanks. I found them and 'hid' them. Funnily enough, one of the updates which won't install is on my 'installed' list in the Control Panel. Go figure.

I did the 'fix' through the error message I posted, but I downloaded and installed the 'fix' you posted. I'm about to shut down for the night, so I'll see if it actually worked.

I did both the 'hide' option (although I can't find a way to make them visible again) and the 'fix it' download.

One of them worked. No more lengthy shut-downs waiting for them to download and supposedly install.

Shut-down now takes seconds rather than minutes.

look at your original post attachment, on the left side control panel home is "restore hidden updates" if you need it in the future.
