Hi I just got vista and I'm having a bunch of problems. My internet is working fine with internet explorer, but when i try to stream video in windows media player or real player it wont connect to the internet. The same thing happened when I tried to download java and AIM. I turned my firewall off and it still won't work. If anyone has any clue what is goin on I'd really appreciate it. thanks

One thing I can tell you is that more information is needed in order to provide the best assistance. Please tell us:

PC Make and Model
Is Vista an upgrade or clean install
Are all of your drivers and other hardware functional?
Is your PC connected to a router (wireless or hard-wired) or directly to a DSL / Cable Modem?

It's a brand new Compaq Presario, so the vista isn't an upgrade - it just came with the computer. The rest of my computer seems to be functioning, and I'm hard-wired through DSL. Thanks

could you please explain exactly what is happening when you try and stream error ect

do you mean you were unable to download AIM and Java through IE?

windows help in vista is very good give it a try aswell

Thanks for the replies.

ok an example, when I try to download AIM heres what happens.
I click download
The when the window pops up I click run.
The download window pops up and finishes then a new window pops up and says "AIM is having difficulty making a connection at this time. Please try again later by double-clicking the Resume AIM Download"

While this is happening I am still on internet explorer, my interent connection never gives out. thanks

I just tried to download Firefox and the download went fine, but when firefox started up it wouldnt connect to the internet. thanks again

I feel like a big idiot, but apparently there were two firewalls running on this computer. I fhad fixed the windows firewall, but I hadn't realized there was a norton firewall as well. It's all better now. Thank you so much for helping me out, even if it was becuase i'm an idiot. thanks again

hey Ricky Glad you got it sorted. Don't feel like an idiot, the fact you asked has prompted valid replies for others to try if they get the same thing and you have come back and told us what the problem was which will also help others, thanks for doing that, you have made a valuable contribution by doing so.

my advice on Windows Vista....I wouldn't buy it for at least another year. Usually the first 12-18 Months you find the major problems of an operating system, I remember when XP was introduced, it took nearly two years to work out all the problems. I tell all my friends and what not to hold of on buying Vista til at least after the Holiday season or better to wait til next summer, cause newer verisons and updated patches of Vista will be out by then.

Sadly if you buy a new computer you will often have very little choice. If it a pc then you will get vista like it or not, just the same as it was with xp and those before it. It is about as close as you can get to a legal monopoly.

here's a thought. Find a copy of windows XP and get rid of your copy of Vista. Either that or trade in your PC for a Mac

Do any of you guys actually use vista or just make it your job to bag it?

Just curious

I am not "bagging" it. I can't I haven't used it. If you read what I say I am decrying the lack of choice. Any of my pro Mac posts are based on my experience of the mac and xp and it's forerunners, not on vista. I'm sure vista is loverly for all those it works for and a pain in the ass for those it doesn't, just the same as any other OS including OS X. Me I like OS X compared to what I am used to. What is so wrong with me expressing that. I don't jump down your throat when you praise vista I keep quiet.
