Quite likely most readers will wonder what the hell that old man is raving about. That is assuming anybody reads it. A few of us old schoolers care a lot about the declining state of clarity in communication. From time to time I will drop in a few of the noticeable mistakes, such as today's rant concerning "As best as" (I can).
The three levels of affirmation are good, better, best.
Good involves a judgment. Better is a comparative, and Best is an absolute. There can be no better than best. I will do the best I can, but not the best as I can.
To whom does this matter besides a few old stodgy editors and educators? Probably such innocous lapses in verbal style would fly right on by most people. I think exceptions to this might be interviewers, evaluators, and critics whose recommendations often get grants approved, prizes and prized job opportunities. They do notice. This is a small thing on the grand scheme, but something to consider in order to move yourself up the ladder to bigger and better business success.
