if they are giving out passes. Does that mean they are loosing the player base?

they are losing a few players, but they still have plenty and most "left" players return as soon as there is new content. the x days passes are nothing new and have been there before. but what is new, is that you can now have free trial accounts and level until lvl 20 or so.

So long as there are 40 year-olds, pale as whitest silk, wasting away in a basement there will always be WoW.

good god no. wow will never lose player base. Its just too big at this point. Unless blizzard does something that out does wow...

Their player base, no? I think WoW will still go strong for a long while. However, it has lost about 900k people since the beginning of this year (I am one of those. Yeah, I'm a statistic!) which is a good chunk no matter how you slice it.
I was talking on skype with a few friends that recently quit WoW after the boring 4.2 patch. The lack of content since the Cata launch is just crazy which is why Blizz really is struggling to keep people actually subscribed.

I was even offered a free month (with the purchase of a month) to play to come back to WoW from Blizzard and I still won't.

I played for like 5 years or so and I was not surprised how easy it was to quit. Don't get me wrong, I love the game the lore behind it but both the community and the lack of end game content are killing the game.
