Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone was able to offer me some advice.

Ok, here is the senerio.

I've got BT Internet, unlimited broadband, and i play a game called World of warcraft. Some of you guys may know of this game.

I am happy playing around 130ms (latency) or maybe even lower during normal day time hours and evening hours as well, all fine. At midnight onwards my latency skyrockets up to 1000+, this happends every night without fail which makes the game unplayable. Its always the same time every night.

So.... i instantly thought that BT was capping my intenet at that time of the night so I phoned them, had abit of a fight with them. Aparently there is no cap on my broadband, so i explained what happends with my internet (its not just wow which grinds to a halt) so they test the line and came up with the idea there is a problem with the line. At this point getting quite annoyed with the fact that the person on the other side of my phone can't speak the slightest bit of english and i could hear the girl sitting next to him better than i could hear him. I'm thinking, my line is fine during the day with other people using the intenet. From midnight onwards its only me using it and i get all the problems.

Now they are sending out a BT engineer to look at my line which i personally think is fine.

I was wondering if any of you guys have come across this problem before or can give a reason for this problem?

i've had the same problem around 1am with my provider. they claimed nothing on their end is wrong, but i know its not on mine.

turns out they do updates at or around 1am EVERY NIGHT, and they didn't think to tell me. they just figure not too many people are gonna be on, and it won't fuck over the people that are on too badly...even tho it does

i'd suggest that might be your issue as well

Be sure none of your housemates has a torrent client set to download from midnight on a schedule.

is there anyway to stop these updates? and no i've asked no one torrents at all apart from me and i only torrent when doing nothing else.

I haven't torrented in about a month, shouldn't have anything to do with it

nope. no way to stop them from updating shit. its on THEIR end of the connection, and it just fucks you over cause you wanna use the net at the same time they're slowing it down

if you notice anytime where your internet completely freezes for at least a minute at a time, usually around the same time each night as well, its probably that. you could call them and ask them about it but i'm sure it won't make a difference, like it didn't for me

Don't forget that BT uses a contention ratio of 50:1 on domestic broadband lines. You or your house mates may not be downloading, but others in the area maybe.

This is after the BT engineer came out, BUT BUT lets wait until to night when the problems are due to start

at least that ping looks reasonable. before your ping was really horrible ..

Can't believe the engineer blamed the actual socket for the problem! Because the socket had a grudge against you and broke at the same time every night...
