I know very little about gaming systems (what can I say, I spend most of my time watching porn!). Anyhow, I thought about buying myself one for Xmas and started doing some research. To my surprise, I learned that apparently both the XBox 360 and PS3 can connect to a computer so you can play music, photos and even video through the system on your TV!

Considering that I have a ton of WMV files saved on my PC from all the gay porn sites I've joined over the years, the thought of being able to watch these on my 42" HDTV via a gaming system is very exciting!

My question: do any of you guys use your gaming system in this way? How does it work? Which is better for doing this... Xbox or PS3? Is the quality good?
(!)

I don't know about the PS3, and I haven't tried this (Hmmmmmmmmm :D )...but it is easy to watch movies from your computer through the Xbox 360, especially if you have Windows Media Center.

Yes I use the 360 to stream porn from my pc sometimes. It works amazingly well, except for the fact the video format must be windows media compatible (which means no .avi).

I also stream music. I have an XM online account, and can listen to internet radio from my 360.

Still, the 360 is no substitute for the pc. Especially since the interface is lacking giving you very little control over anything. You can't even organize the 360 harddrive with folders like a pc.

360's were recently updated to play divx.

Yeah thank god! :) Now i can burn divx files on to a blank DVD and watch them on my xbox360 instead of my laptop!! So much nicer!!

How exactly? Mine still isn't playing avi.

Burn a divx or avi movie onto blank dvd. Put it in your 360. The 360 will say it's a mixed media CD. Go to the videos department in the dashboard and click on play movie from console. You be asked if you want to install this optional video update. Say yes.

2 mins later and bang your in! :)

So can you fast forward & rewind videos with the XBox controller? Or do you hit play and have to watch it all the way through? And is the image quality the same as on a PC?

well I have never tried to streamline anything so that I cannot tell you. But movies and divx files on DVD's......Yes you can use the remote to do all the things that a DVD player can do. If your 360 is your only DVD player or you use it alot to watch and view stuff on it. I suggest you get the remote control for it. Easier to use then the controller is! :)

Do you know if you can save WMV files on a CD or DVD and have the 360 play them?

Yes the controller lets you FF, RW, pause, etc. Actually the 360 gives you 2 different ways of streaming media from your PC. You can do it through Media Center, or you can connect to your pc using Zune software. I prefer using the Zune software (which can be downloaded for free; you don't need a Zune to use it). The Media Center interface is quite horrid, clunky, and designed by monkeys.

For me, quality is about the same as it is on the pc. But like anything else, it just depends on the quality of recorded media.

Too much work. I want to be able to stream avi just like I can wmv from my pc without having to burn to a disk.

yeah. I guess but if it's a file that I want to keep around...say some foreign tv shows or movies that are not available over here...then burning is the way to go! :)

Plus I hate trying to stream from my PC to my xbox 360. :)

Ahhhh!!! Pretty sneaky sis! That's what I was doing wrong! I kept getting that mixed media in the tray but didn't know what to do, gave up, then forgot about it.
Thanks! ..| ...
